The Upcycling Project Embracing the Value of Sustained Use

Hello. We want to introduce you to the upcycling project we conducted under the Creative Partners program at the Creative Center. As the ‘Less Plastic’ campaign spreads, glass, an eco-friendly material, is often mentioned as an alternative. However, we faced the uncomfortable truth that, based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) standards, glass can be more harmful to the environment than plastic in terms of energy consumption and pollutant emissions during production and disposal if not recycled or reused. Of course, if recycling and reuse are well implemented, glass can be much more eco-friendly. The challenge, though, lay in the fact that much of the glass is used once and discarded. This led us to ponder how we might design to ‘ensure our creations are used for a long duration.’

The Process of Reimagining Cosmetic Containers with Sustainable Value

From the outset of the project, our principle was to maintain the intrinsic environmental friendliness of glass, preserving its physical properties while only altering its shape to allow for future recycling and reuse without combining it with other materials.

We envisioned objects that carry the value of reuse and its history, extending the shape and function of used cosmetic glass containers and bringing healing to nature and our daily lives.

We began exploring the possibilities with artist Park Sun-min, who had been working with discarded bottles. Due to the unique shapes and coating techniques of pre-molded cosmetic containers, we faced many constraints. While we could have melted the containers into any desired shape, our goal was to minimize processing and enhance the usability and completeness of the objects as they are. Through partial processing, the resulting pieces retained their original history while accentuating each container's unique characteristics.

For Sulwhasoo containers, for instance, we observed the natural cracking of the coating and the disappearing logo during the blowing process, leaving behind the traces of the original design and completing it with a beautiful texture.

For primera containers, we preserved the embossed logo, increasing its utility. The bottom of the cream container could be reused as a plate, the top as an incense holder, and the bottom section, when stacked in two pieces, could be used as a diffuser or a mini vase.

Re: Shaped_Vase 1

We smoothly melted the two common elements of cosmetic containers - the neck and screw part - to create a base shape with multiple layers of waves and beautiful curves.

Re: Shaped_Vase 2, 3

For HANYUL containers, we expanded the bottom part, naturally incorporating the logo's trace and adopting two sizes - skin and emulsion. We displayed the original and converted containers together for intuitive recognition and as a scene demonstrating reuse.

Amore Busan

In April 2023, sustainable objects combined with flowers were displayed at Amore Busan, a complex cultural space. In particular, primera containers were reused as diffuser vessels containing the scent of Puzzlewood, allowing visitors to experience the upcycling process of empty bottles.

We hope these used cosmetic containers, as objects carrying the CSR message and the value of reuse, resonate in any space and remain with us for a long time.
