[ESG A to Z] Easy to Understand ESG News, Issue #2
Did You Enjoy Amore Stories Easy to Understand [ESG A to Z] News Issue #1? Following our previous episode, we have curated only the ESG information that will prove invaluable to you.
For those who perceive the climate crisis as a distant issue, we elucidate why it warrants our attention. 😀
✔️ With former President Donald Trump elected as the 47th President of the United States, global focus on climate change response policies has intensified. The essence of these policies lies in fulfilling greenhouse gas reduction commitments and ensuring that nations with significant emissions support those adversely affected. The United States, bearing one of the highest greenhouse gas emissions, plays a pivotal role in this dynamic.
Should the United States withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement and discontinue its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it would significantly jeopardize the attainment of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) established under the agreement.
(🚨 Former President Trump set a precedent by withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement in 2017. Subsequently, on the first day of President Biden's inauguration, an executive order was signed to rejoin the Paris Climate Agreement.)
Responding to climate change remains a crucial issue that people worldwide are attentively monitoring and addressing at every moment❗
👋 A Moment of General Knowledge
✔️ Paris Agreement: Adopted in 2015 at the 21st Conference of the Parties (COP21) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Paris, this treaty mandates that from 2020 onward, all nations—not just developed countries—establish and implement national greenhouse gas reduction targets, thereby creating a universal framework for emissions reduction.
✔️ The Paris Agreement stipulates that efforts must be made to limit the global average temperature increase to below 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
✔️ To prevent global warming, it is imperative to reduce greenhouse gases. Consequently, member countries, including South Korea, must formulate national greenhouse gas reduction targets every five years and submit them to the UNFCCC secretariat.
✔️ February of next year marks the deadline for submitting national greenhouse gas reduction targets extending to 2035. As these targets must exceed the previous goals set for 2030, global attention is now sharply focused on each country's commitments.
Hands up if you’ve ever wondered, "Will my individual actions really make any difference to the environment?" 👋
✔️ Spotlight Here! We have received some encouraging news recently. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO)1), through its report on the ozone layer1), has projected that "if each country's policies are maintained as they are now, the ozone layer will recover to 1980s levels by 2040."
🔍 While not directly related to global warming, I wanted to share a case where environmental improvement was achieved through cooperation. 😏
Most people have heard about the destruction of the ozone layer—a severe issue that poses threats to humans and ecosystems through increased ultraviolet radiation. The ‘Montreal Protocol,’ officially in effect since 1989, outlines the phased reduction of consumption and production of ozone-depleting substances, including chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Thanks to the proactive efforts of participating nations, the global use of CFCs has decreased by 99%. This remarkable achievement is precisely why the Montreal Protocol is hailed as the ‘most environmentally friendly international environmental agreement.’
🌍📉 Isn't it genuinely gratifying that our small efforts to care for the environment are bearing such fruitful results? While it may be challenging to act alone, if we continue to unite our efforts, we can indeed pass on a better future to the next generation.

Addressing climate change is not a distant issue. With a bit of interest and proactive effort, anyone can start making a difference right now. LET’S START❗
🌍 As discussed in the previous issue, reducing plastic usage during product manufacturing and maximizing the recycling of used products contribute to reducing Scope 3 emissions. Remember, mitigating Scope 3 emissions requires everyone's participation. 🤗
Plastic is a lightweight, durable, inexpensive, and readily producible material. Consequently, completely eliminating plastic use is practically challenging. Therefore, activities such as using less plastic, ensuring proper collection, and extending the lifespan of plastic products to prevent them from lingering meaninglessly on our planet are crucial.
This is precisely why Amorepacific conducts its plastic reduction campaign, "LESS PLASTIC. WE ARE FANTASTIC!" Participating in such campaigns can significantly aid in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. ♻️
✔️ LESS Plastic! Just Remember the 4Rs
🌍 Methods to reduce plastic include 1) decreasing the overall use of plastic, achieving 100% recycling of already used plastic packaging, reusing materials, and composting. To accomplish these goals, companies employ a variety of plastic strategies.
✏️ Amorepacific is diligently working towards LESS Plastic by implementing the 4Rs: Reduce, Recycle, Reuse, and Return. Let us delve into these strategies and show you how to participate easily. 🤗
(1)The 3Rs Amorepacific is Actively Pursuing
🌍 Amorepacific continuously strives to reduce plastic usage and create products that are easy to recycle and reuse collected plastics. A prime example of these efforts includes expanding the use of recycled materials in product packaging and developing refillable products to enable container reuse.
These initiatives embody the 3Rs. Let’s explore each of them in more detail:
✏1.REDUCE: This strategy focuses on lightening the weight of plastic itself. It involves eliminating unnecessary plastic components or packaging and replacing them with recyclable materials such as glass or paper.
✏2.RECYCLE: Recycling aims to create a seamless plastic circulation system. This involves designing products from the outset to be easily recyclable and engaging in activities like container collection campaigns to reuse recycled plastic materials.
✏3.REUSE: Reuse entails repeatedly using plastic products. This is typically achieved by creating refillable products or offering refill services.
Products aligned with the 3Rs are as follows: 😏
(2)RETURN: A Collective Effort
✏The final R, Return, is essential for Amorepacific to recycle effectively. This is the reason behind Amorepacific's container collection campaign, AMORE:CYCLE.
❗ When cosmetic containers are disposed of through standard recycling processes, their varied colors and materials can lead to sorting errors, making recycling difficult. Encouraging consumers to participate in the container collection campaign and utilize a separate sorting process significantly increases the likelihood of successfully recycling cosmetic containers.
♻️AMORE:CYCLE is Amorepacific’s container collection campaign that retrieves used cosmetic containers from Amore Mall and offline stores for recycling. The program helps minimize waste destined for landfills or incineration by ensuring that collected containers are maximally recycled.
✔️ Starting in January 2024, the container collection campaign expanded its services from offline locations to online platforms (Amore Mall), making it more convenient for customers to participate. Additionally, the range of collected items has been significantly broadened to boost recycling rates. Beyond plastic and glass cosmetic containers, the campaign now includes household items such as hair, body, and hand care products, makeup items like cushions, compact powders, and even perfume containers.
📢 Niche Appeal 📢
✔️ 2,592 Tons of Cosmetic Containers Recycled Over 15 Years (2009–2023)
✔️ Approximately 230,000 Individuals Participated in the Campaign in 2023
From 2009 to 2023, the Amorepacific Group has collected a cumulative total of 2,592 tons of used cosmetic containers through its container collection campaigns. In 2023 alone, 119 tons were collected, with around 230,000 individuals participating and over two million containers retrieved.
How Are Cosmetic Containers Recycled? 🤔
Cosmetic containers disposed of through separate collection processes are taken to Amorepacific’s logistics center in Osan. There, materials and lids undergo a meticulous sorting process. Some materials are repurposed as raw materials, while others are transformed into cosmetic containers. Additionally, a portion is upcycled into construction materials, artworks, and public designs.

🌍♻️What is Amorepacific’s Dream?
Amorepacific aims to achieve Net Zero by 2050 by eliminating Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions. Net Zero means that the amount of greenhouse gases emitted is balanced by the amount removed from the atmosphere.
🌏✨How was This Verified?
Amorepacific has received verification for its 2030 greenhouse gas reduction targets and its 2050 Net Zero goal from the global initiative, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). ✔️ This means Amorepacific is committed to achieving Net Zero by 2050 through the previously discussed methods.
🤚A Brief Pause: What is SBTi?
The SBTi is a global initiative establishing emission reduction targets based on reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the International Energy Agency (IEA). It provides criteria for setting reduction targets aimed at limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C and verifies companies' short-term goals or long-term Net Zero objectives. 🌡️
Through SBTi approval, Amorepacific ensures its greenhouse gas reduction and Net Zero goals are objective. 🔍✨ As of December 10, 2024, only nine companies, including Amorepacific, in South Korea have had their Net Zero goals approved under SBTi standards.
