Encountering GABEE's New Beauty

Authentically and Playfully, I Am My Own Best Manager!

The ‘New Beauty Icon’ series introduce individuals who inspire the world through their unique beauty. This week’s focus is the dancer GABEE. While she traverses a diverse landscape of content—from stages and YouTube to television broadcasts—GABEE defines her core identity as a ‘dancer.’ In her world, the most shining aspect is her dancing self. Naturally, she also cherishes her presence in broadcasts and various content. By becoming her own manager and embracing even her most vulnerable moments, dancer GABEE exemplifies a beauty that is authentically her own.

The newly launched “Diva Village Queen GABEE” series on her YouTube channel is receiving tremendous affection. Did you anticipate such a level of popularity?

This content was created to do what feels most authentic to me. It could have succeeded or failed, but I prioritized enjoyment over outcome. It might not have taken off, but my goal was to craft something I genuinely love and find joy in, and I’m deeply thankful that others are sharing in that delight. That said, when filming, I become completely immersed, which works well, but occasionally, when asked to deliver lines in the Queen GABEE persona, it takes me a little time to engage fully. In those moments, I exclaim, “Immersion manager!” Haha.

Since GABEE’s debut, I’ve sensed a subtle shift in the world. It feels as though the conventional standards of beauty have been upended.

That’s overly generous. If the world’s standards have shifted, it’s less about my influence and more about the changing times. If there's any impact I hope to make, it's in broadening the opportunities available to dancers. Fortunately, it is happening, even if just slightly, and that allows me to work with joy. All the friends I collaborate with on Queen GABEE are dancers, too. I genuinely enjoy seeing them appear in Queen GABEE, not necessarily dancing but showcasing their talents and highlighting their attractive personalities. Compared to other professions, dancers have struggled to gain attention. My aim isn’t to set out with grand ambitions to change the world but to have fun with friends. By doing so, people will see dancers as more captivating.

Are you defining your core identity as a dancer?

I am a dancer. The moment GABEE shines the brightest is when she’s dancing. So even now, no longer serving as a backup dancer, I consistently participate in collaborative performances. Additionally, no matter how busy I am, I never miss choreographing for LACHICA1), as dancing brings me the greatest joy. Even when I was a backup dancer, I truly enjoyed it. It wasn’t always easy—there were tiring and challenging moments—but I found it immensely fun. As a broadcaster, GABEE embodies a dancer, which makes her even more captivating. No matter how successful I become in other fields, I always maintain my core focus on being a dancer and choreographer. I absolutely do not want to lose the title of dancer. Moreover, by staying centered as a dancer, I believe I can inspire my dancing friends to have the courage to pursue other endeavors as dancers.

1) A South Korean dance and choreography team, led by GABEE and comprising members Rian and Simeez.

I feel you have an immense sense of responsibility as a dancer. Recently, I watched a ‘JAESSBEE’ video where you discussed choreography copyrights. Choreography is also a realm of creation, yet it doesn’t receive the same rights protection as other fields. What are your thoughts on this?

As a senior dancer, I say what I need to say whenever opportunities arise, hoping that younger dancers find satisfaction in their profession. While it’s truly gratifying to craft choreography, we love and enjoy dancing together, and I would like to be more satisfied with some aspects of the creative process. Even abroad, choreography copyright systems need to be well-established. It’s rare for the rights of dancing artists to be acknowledged. It would be incredibly admirable if our country could pioneer this initiative. While having additional income from copyrights would be nice, my primary goal isn’t solely about that. I hope for a world where I can assert that this dance is my creation—a world where the choreographer’s name is accurately credited.

This makes me reconsider choreography creation. You’ve been very active in broadcasting these days. Whenever GABEE appears on screen, there’s anticipation. Your broadcasting talent seems extraordinary.

It’s less about talent and more about effort. After Street Woman Fighter2), I thought opportunities like this wouldn’t come again in my life, so I did everything I could. Whenever media like broadcasts or YouTube called, I rushed to them. I didn’t shy away from any work, which immensely helped me. By engaging in various tasks, I met diverse people and experienced different situations, which helped me understand what I’m good at and what I’m not. I trained myself by facing challenges on the ground, which is why I sometimes receive compliments.

2) A female dance crew survival program aired on Mnet, the specialized music channel, which featured GABEE as a member of the LACHICA crew.

Is the success of your personal channel based on that effort?

In a way, yes. In a way, yes, but Queen GABEE actually began with a completely opposite mindset. I had been diligently performing wherever I was called, but at some point, I realized I wasn’t being true to myself. Broadcasting requires selection, so I was only acting in ways that would be chosen. I felt that this is not sustainable. To avoid regretting it, I started Queen GABEE. I genuinely wanted to do it and felt the time had come to show my true self.

The Queen GABEE character fits perfectly, doesn’t it? You’ve found yourself rather than being what others want.

That’s right. It required significant production costs, and we had yet to learn how the public would react, but we pushed forward. I took a bold step, using the money I had saved from working and considering it an investment. It was a risk, but fortunately, many people have come to love it.

Rather than finding what is authentically you from the start, you tried various experiences and discovered what you truly wanted.

Exactly. I sometimes faced criticism for not being selective about what I pursued. However, I needed to understand the breadth of my capabilities at that time. I required experiences to determine how far I could go, what I excelled at, and what I truly desired. Instead of unthinkingly searching for what I wanted, I made decisions after exploring various options. The Queen GABEE character emerged naturally from the moments I spent hanging out with friends. I’ve been a fan of American reality shows since childhood, finding their exaggerated and seemingly detached-from-reality lifestyles amusing. Mimicking them often led to laughter and enjoyment.

So, does GABEE genuinely want things to be funny and entertaining?

Haha, yes. Whatever I do, it has to be enjoyable. I dance because it’s fun, and I engage in broadcasts and the Queen GABEE persona because they bring me joy. Choosing bold outfits is also a matter of fun. I absolutely love working with entertaining individuals like KINKY, Seungheon, and Jaeejae. Since I find it enjoyable, the audience perceives it that way, too. And today’s New Beauty Icon photoshoot is incredibly fun!

Can you share your thoughts on being selected as a New Beauty Icon?

I was delighted to be invited based on a beauty that is authentic, both externally and internally, rather than conforming to stereotypical standards. I’m grateful that you see me as someone who embodies that unique beauty.

When do you feel most beautiful? When is the moment that you feel most attractive?

When I’m treating someone to a meal? Haha. The most beautiful moments in life occur when I get along well with those around me and feel grateful to them. In those times, my efforts to express gratitude made me feel beautiful. I’m someone who finds giving much happier than receiving.

What is “Your Unique Beauty” as defined by GABEE?

Passionately and joyfully doing what I love!

How do you maintain ‘your unique beauty,’ GABEE?

I may have a keen intuition, but I don’t consider myself exceptionally analytical. Therefore, it’s crucial for me to avoid overthinking. After all, things rarely go exactly as planned. If I were to craft my image meticulously, every detail would become transparent. Understanding this, I strive to remain honest. Making a conscious effort to be genuine, without excessive calculation, is the best way to preserve my authentic beauty.

Who embodies one’s unique beauty in your eyes?

My fellow dancers. They are all New Beauty Icons.
They don’t confine themselves to stereotypical beauty standards but showcase their individuality and do what they truly desire.

Lastly, what advice would you give those trying to find their unique beauty?

Your environment is critical in finding yourself. It’s not easy, but first, cut ties with relationships that drain you. You can never take care of yourself if you’re entangled in unhealthy relationships. After removing those toxic relationships, treat yourself well. These days, I make sure to eat well, exercise whenever I have time, take care of my skin, and get regular health check-ups. These are basic things, but by caring for them, you can more easily discover what you truly want. The manager of a queen is close; become your own manager.

In the ‘New Beauty Icon’ series, we meet individuals who inspire the world and explore ‘their own beauty’ they’ve discovered in their lives.
