Each month, AMOREPACIFIC STORIES collaborates with illustrators who are inspired by Korean beauty, visually expressing the 'Create New Beauty' that Amorepacific pursues.

#Theme
The last of the cold has lifted, and even the breeze feels gentle now — April is here. This month, AMOREPACIFIC STORIES follows the gaze of Janice Chae, an artist whose sensibility mirrors the season's quiet warmth. To her, the Amorepacific building is a place where childhood curiosity and fond memories still linger. In this new work, she weaves those precious fragments of the past together with a contemporary touch, composing a scene where tradition and everyday life breathe side by side. A quiet resonance rises from scenes encountered across the span of years. We invite you to look into the landscape she has painted and find your own warm record of spring.

Hello, everyone. I'm Janice Chae, a multimedia artist who brings together the precision of digital work and the warmth of hand-drawn illustration. My practice explores the coexistence of contemporary sensibility and painterly warmth, drawing on both Eastern and Western aesthetics to create scenes in which diverse elements come together in harmony. #Artist Interview
Q. Where did you find the inspiration for the piece you created for AMOREPACIFIC STORIES? Please tell us a little about it.
A. The starting point was my memory of visiting the Amorepacific building. I used to pass through often because my family lived nearby, and the space left a lasting impression on me — somewhere in the heart of the city where you could still feel nature's presence and people's warmth. In this piece, I wanted to capture how that warmth seeps into the familiar rhythms of Seoul. I placed a traditional Korean pavilion alongside a modern building to express the flow between past and present, and through the people living within that landscape, I hoped to show that the moments of everyday life can compose a landscape of their own.

Q. What is the message you most want to convey through your work, and what kind of beauty do you hope viewers discover in it?
A. When you take a moment to look with genuine affection at the scenes you pass by every day without a second thought, hidden stories begin to reveal themselves. I often draw from the emotions I feel when observing nature, particularly the way plants that share the same roots grow into entirely different forms, each one its own expression of nature's richness. I hope my work can be a small pause in a busy day, offering people the space to look at the world around them with a little more warmth and tenderness.
Q. What went through your mind when you first heard Amorepacific's vision of Create New Beauty?
A. My first thought was how closely it reflects what I'm working toward myself. To me, new beauty isn't simply about creating something that has never existed before — it begins with looking at what already exists through a fresh set of eyes. I've been reinterpreting traditional subjects in a contemporary way: mother-of-pearl lacquerware patterns, tigers from Korean minhwa folk paintings. The process of revisiting past aesthetics through today's lens felt very much in step with what Amorepacific means by 'Create New Beauty.'

Q. How does it feel to be collaborating with AMOREPACIFIC STORIES?
A. I'm truly thrilled to be working with Amorepacific, a brand that gives the finest expression to Korean aesthetics. I've long admired the cultural initiatives Amorepacific has pursued over the years, so being able to celebrate a brand I've always loved through my own artwork means a great deal to me as an artist.
Q. What does 'my own beauty' mean to you personally?
A. To me, 'my own beauty' isn't about choosing one identity over another. It's about having the heart to embrace all the different facets of who you are and let them exist in harmony. I'm both Korean and American, and an artist who works in digital media and Eastern painting at the same time. There was a time when I felt I had to choose between these different sides of myself, but I know now that the sum of all these pieces is what makes my beauty uniquely mine. I think the courage to affirm who you truly are, rather than measuring yourself against someone else's standards, is where real beauty begins.
Q. Do you have any personal habits or principles that help you cultivate your own beauty in everyday life?
A. I place a lot of value on small acts of observation and documentation in everyday life. I photograph and write about the unfamiliar streets of Singapore, where I now live, and the quiet moments I share with family, slowly building a sense of my own tastes and preferences. These records become wonderful material for my artwork, and each day I ask myself what makes me happy to look at, what draws my heart in. That ongoing inquiry is how I keep finding my own color.
Q. Finally, do you have a word for those who are striving to discover their own beauty?
A. I hope you never forget that you already have more than enough of your own kind of charm. Beauty isn't a test with a fixed right answer; it's the joyful process of gradually refining the raw gem that is you. If you have tastes or thoughts that set you apart from others, those are exactly what can become your own unique color. Believe in yourself, and keep nurturing the color that is yours and yours alone. I'm cheering you on with all my heart.
