A change in middle-aged Japanese men's attitude toward beauty

What is a genderless style?

In recent columns, I have introduced beauty trends prevalent among Japanese men, but today I'd like to talk about men who espouse a genderless style. That is to say, men who enjoy skincare, makeup, aesthetic salon, nail art and sex-blind fashion.
Genderless style – does it sound strange to say it? Let me first detail the distinctive elements of men's genderless style.
Elements of men's genderless style:

ㆍFancy hair color and colored lenses
ㆍGreat interest in beauty, makeup and nails and a superb fashion sense
ㆍSlender figure to fit women's wear
ㆍBut, they're not a drag queen. They simply like a gender-neutral style!
Many men of genderless style work as magazine models (or reader models) boasting tens of thousands of social media followers. They are absolute stars among middle and high school students and some of them even appear on TV. It's no wonder that their genderless style takes center stage – it's big with teenagers very interested in fashion and beauty.
In fact, men of genderless style were particularly popular in 2010, when gender-neutral fashion was first introduced. Gender-neutral fashion blurred the line between menswear and womenswear and embodied the idea of feminine menswear. Fashion was no longer a representation of femininity and masculinity, but an expression of true personal individuality. Though it was once written off as a sub-culture, genderless fashion has become mainstream with increased awareness toward gender equality since 2010 and a new style tribe has emerged – men of genderless style, also known as neo boys. They are sometimes suspected of being sexual minorities, but they are in fact just a group of men interested in beauty.
It's now easy to find men wearing accessories that would be thought as feminine – even skirts. Their fashion and makeup style remind that it's perhaps time for our beauty products to go gender-neutral.
In conclusion, I would like to introduce some men celebrated for their genderless style. If you subscribe to Japanese magazines, you might have seen male models with a similar vibe.
