The Secret Wonders of Tai Hang

Hello everyone! I am back with some more food recommendations from Hong Kong! This time I want to introduce another cool little hideout in the city - Tai Hang (大坑)!
This place is not hard to get to, just one stop away from the bustling shopping district of Causeway Bay (which is also where AMOREPACIFIC Hong Kong is located!). While next to this commercial center is a quiet suburb that provides an easy escape to the chaos of this metropolis.
Once you exit the MTR from Tin Hau station through Exit A and a few hundred metres in, you'll find a strip that is distinctively Hong Kong, but lots slower and...Let's say far more unique.
Facing you at the main crosswalk is a series of small businesses, ranging from a liquor shop, a Vietnamese pho place, a vintage-style ramen bar, and even a small restaurant specialises in hotpots. Opposite of that are more choices - Mexican, Vietnamese, and local wonders.
So, what is the difference of this place than the already-famous Soho, Causeway Bay or Tsim ShaTsui? It's that this place is far more relaxed with all the independent goodies that are otherwise rare in this urban jungle. Since I am an incredibly sweet-tooth, let me start off with some of the dessert places and cafe highlights in the area!
Ice cream being prepared with all its glory!
Greeting you at the street corner is an eye-catching store covered in white, tiffany blue and pink. Loooop (yes with four "O"s) is a creative ice-cream store that provides options by the season. As you can see, during my first visit in winter, they had designs like snowman and reindeer to suit the festivity. While in Easter, they came up with an adorable design of a chick on the top of the ice cream. The store's signature flavor is "Blue Moon" - a blue colored yogurt based ice cream. And it comes with a twist - ice creams here are usually served in a cookie cone!
It is definitely entertaining to watch the staff carefully assemble the ice cream with edible decorations in front of you! They will carefully place the edible decorations on your ice cream. On the down side, when there is a line, it does take a while before you can get your treat!

Speaking of ice cream, there is another parlor that would give you a wow-factor. Lab Made does its magic through combining Hong Kong's tastes with ice cream processed with liquid nitrogen. Watching this gastronomic design of turning liquid into ice cream in just a few seconds gives you instant gratification that you won't find at ordinary ice cream stores while cooling you down from the humid heat. Lab Made always come up with very local favors, like HK custard bun, mango pudding, HK style French toast, hoji latte etc. They change their favors once a month, so make sure you get a peep on their Facebook page (
https://www.facebook.com/LabMadeHK/) to see what's in store!
p.s. Lately, they are also doing a "brulee ice cream cheese tart" - basically a tart with cheese-flavored ice cream and a layered of caramelized sugar on top. I have yet to try this, so I shall let you know when I have a chance.

Some tea for everyone, while this is my favourite
One of my other favorites actually a tea shop further in the street grids. Though not as visible as others, this cafe ":jrink" has all you need for a relaxing afternoon. Once you enter, you could see stacks of unique herbal tea choices from across the world. And speaking of choices, not only are the choices listed by countries and flavors, it also has all sorts of alternatives and names that would suit your mood of the day. There must be one that would suit you!
From my few times of visit, I only got to try a small sample of their large offerings, but I liked everything I have tried thus far! This includes a "Hami Pomi." I was first attracted by its sweetness, coming from the blend of honey dew, rose hip, citrus and green tea. It is so refreshing that I definitely drinking this every day! Another time, I tried "Canada Day," which speaks of the true Canadian flavor. The refreshing herbal tea blended perfectly with a distinct touch of maple syrup. The sweetness from the syrup complemented with the rather rich flavor from the herbs, which created something special - something just makes your day in such a relaxing vibe.
"Dirty Cookie Shot" is another remarkable creation of theirs. This tea set comes in two plays - a glass bottle with sweetened milk tea, and a cup made of chocolate cookie. Inside the cookie cup is a strong shot of matcha. Though a bit hard to deal with (with the cookie cup falling apart), this gimmick is one of its kind. There aren't many places that serves you an edible cup that goes with the tea so well.
Not to mention, that ambience can easily attract you to sit in front of the windows and just look at the view in front of you (it goes better with your favorite book - no phones, please).

Lastly, if you are into cheesecakes, here is a shop for you: Noah Castella. This dessertery is known for honey castella cakes with half-melted cheese in the center. Yes, doesn't that sound delicious already? Other than the usual honey flavor, they also provide chocolate castella cake, mango castella and even strawberry castella cake! The cakes range at around $130 - $170.
If you think one cake is too much for you, don't worry! The shop recently introduced single serving cheesecake in a cup. Besides, the cup is decorated with Hong Kong's celebrity cat Mr. Cream, so it's absolutely adorable and can be re-used! Each cup is only for $48, definitely a value-for-money set!

Other honorable mentions: there are a couple of low-profile chicken pot stores that have been around for a long time. Though I have not personally been there, I can testify that these serve as one of the most authentic and comfortable tastes Hong Kong has to offer. Also remember to check out the traditional dessert shops round the corner to complete the local experience.
Walking around the streets of Tai Hang and check out the different stores and see what they have to offer. Perhaps you could find a cute bar and spend a couple of hours chilling with your favorite brew afterwards! Around the corner, there are also cute murals like the ones above! Hope you will get to try some of my recommendations above when you visit Tai Hang!
