No.4 2021 Color Trend

Hello, fellow members~ This is makeup artist Vincent, who knows a little bit about beauty. It is now the time of the year when we wrap up the year and prepare for the next. How about we start preparing for 2021 by taking a look at next year's color trends?

What is Pantone?

  • Pantone Color of the Year, from 2000 to 2020

Most of us will think of Pantone when we think of the 'Color of the Year'.
Pantone was established in 1963 by Lawrence Herbert and gained its reputation with Pantone Matching System (PMS), which attached a serial number to the many different colors. Since then, Pantone continued to grow and became recognized as 'the most scientific color language' and a 'global common color language', providing a 'standardized color language' used across industries. It also predicts the future market and selects and recommends upcoming color trends.
Since 2000, Pantone has announced 'Color of the Year' on the first week of December every year.

How is Color of the Year Chosen?

Pantone does not arbitrarily or simply select the Color of the Year. It selects the Color of the Year based on three steps and the details of each step are as follows.
1) Future market survey – a step predicting which colors will have an impact on consumer preference
2) Big data analysis – sorting out colors with the most interest based on market survey
3) Validity analysis – analyzing reasons and supporting evidence that the color candidate is worthy of being selected as Color of the Year
Like the above steps, Pantone's Color of the Year is finalized based on survey and verification of its reliability.

Why Select Color of the Year?

To state the conclusion, it is to provoke attention to colors. By announcing Color of the Year, Pantone makes people realize how important colors are and encourages creative activities using colors.
The Color of the Year Pantone selected every year since 2000 has become an announcement that not only those in relevant industries, but also many people across the world wait for. Pantone has made efforts to select Color of the Year such as conducting future market survey and predicting and analyzing statistics on various product colors that will be unveiled in the market. Choosing one color by analyzing a huge amount of data is a difficult task, but Pantone identifies and picks Color of the Year with the belief that 'there is always a reason to the colors that are used frequently'. And based on such reason for being, Pantone picks and announces Color of the Year.

  • Color of the Year 2017 'Greenery': with the belief that the yellow-green of young tender leaves will offer a break to tired people of modern society

  • Color of the Year 2018 'Ultra Violet': the hard, tough world desires creativity and mystery

  • Color of the Year 2019 'Living Coral': seeking comfortable warmth and closeness as people yearn for human connection in a more digitalized world

  • Color of the Year 2020 'Classic Blue': with hope to open a flow of communication by encouraging deeper thoughts and perspective, being reminded of the color mixed of curiosity, thoughts, and nostalgia

I have offered a few short examples, but this kind of sentiment is Pantone's strategy and the reason it chooses Color of the Year. The Color of the Year reflects the hope that the public understands the importance of color, the color becomes a topic of conversation, and that we recover our humanity and naturality through color.

2021 SS New York & London Fashion Week Colors

Out of the 4 major fashion weeks (New York, London, Paris, and Milan), people turn to New York and London for the color trend. The reason for that is because Pantone provides its color trend report to only the two fashion capitals. Now, shall we take a closer look at the next season's New York and London color trend reports?

What is the Color of the Year 2021?

Dear readers, have you noticed the Color of the Year as you read this column?
If you noticed two colors that overlap in both New York and London's color palettes, you are a person with a sharp eye. The colors are Illuminating and Marigold.
  • New York and London's Marigold (left : New York / right : London Fashion Week)

  • New York and London's Illuminating (left : New York / right : London Fashion Week)

It is not always the case, but they say the color that is included in both color palettes have a higher possibility of being selected as the Color of the Year. Illuminating and Marigold are both colors of joy and warmth. I personally interpret the color trend as a hope toward overcoming the pandemic of this year in the next year.

Color of the Year 2021 will soon be announced (on the first week of December), but how about we prepare for next year together by taking a glimpse into the key colors of 2021? I end this column with a hopeful message that next year we will end the COVID-19 pandemic and that everything will be okay. Thank you.
