The Skater by Xavier VEILHAN

Last spring, a huge sculpture 5m tall and 9m wide rose up in the front yard of AMOREPACIFIC Beauty Campus in Osan, Gyeonggi-do, Korea. This artwork, portraying the powerful glide of a skater with one hand on the ground, was made by the French artist Xavier VEILHAN upon request from AMOREPACIFIC Museum of Art.
The Skater was designed to be emblematic of the aesthetic value and orientation of AMOREPACIFIC from the construction of Beauty Campus. Over the past five years, dozens of staff members from France, the U.S. and Korea have worked together to install this piece of art. Unlike conventional sculptures which stand vertically, The Skater captures the dynamic image of a short track speed skater moving fast forward and, yet with displaying elegance reminiscent of the progressive, adventurous corporate image of AMOREPACIFIC going global.

This sculpture, with its feet planted wide at the front of the building, features an arch shape under its arms to allow people to pass under and it in fact serves as a medium connecting the Osan Beauty Campus with people, just like it's part of the building. At the same time it is an artwork and yet a token of what VEILHAN values – communication with the audience and harmony with the surrounding environment.
VEILHAN is an artist well known for his public art projects. He turns what is familiar in everyday life into impressive artwork to stamp a definite image of the artwork on the mind of spectators, just as you would in marking a logo for a product. The Skater at Beauty Campus also draws a simple and yet richly symbolic sketch of the present and the future of AMOREPACIFIC through its simple image.
The Skater is the largest artwork that VEILHAN has ever made. The project itself was a big challenge. We hope that this artwork, whose size and expression are rare in suburban industrial quarters, reveals the promising spirit of AMOREPACIFIC and can serve as a landmark to give a boost to the local community.
