Amorepacific's first research lab opened in one corner of its factory in 1954 by putting up partitions. Although it was only a two-pyeong (slightly less than 7m ² ) space, it was the first-ever cosmetics research lab in Korea. During the times of liberation from Japanese colonial rule and the Korean War, when imported goods started to flow into the country, Amorepacific could not stand by and just watch foreign companies gaining dominance in the country's domestic cosmetics industry. Products such as ABC Pomade and ABC Varnishing Cream were already a big hit, but an era that required a more systematic and scientific technology to compete with imported goods was on the horizon. And so, Amorepacific opened a research facility and recruited the best researchers in the country.

 The small two-pyeong research lab grew into the best research facility unparalleled to any facility in Korea's cosmetics industry in the 1960s. In 1992, it grew into the largest research facility in the East. Mizium, which was built in 2010, became another venue for innovation and passion among researchers. This was the fruition of the company's philosophy and belief that the first-in-industry technology and the best quality products create true beauty.

 The R&D Unit creates Asian Beauty by continuously pursuing to be the first and the best. It led to developing our own, unparalleled original products, unfound in the domestic or global industry, such as ABC Ginseng Cream, IOPE Retinol 2500, and Sulwhasoo First Care Activating Serum. The R&D Unit also continued to develop the best technologies based on longstanding research into original ingredients. Our spirit of challenging and testing ourselves, always pursuing the new, continues to write a new chapter in our history of creation to this day.
