Chapter 7. A premium tea brand, OSULLOC

News Square has this year been dedicated to bringing you the low-down on the many different brands of AMOREPACIFIC Group that are spreading beauty in different ways to the five Global Champion Brands. The seventh brand we'd like to introduce is OSULLOC.

OSULLOC rises to prominence in the global market

The only tea brand of AMOREPACIFIC Group, OSULLOC, isto promote the excellence of Korean-made green tea in the world market with the value of worthwhile relaxation derived from tea and Jeju Island. OSULLOC created its premium tea lines –Sejak, Woojeon and Illohyangtea – through organic cultivation on Jeju Island. The brand's efforts to secure quality and innovation have helped these tea lines achieve 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the 2015 North American Tea Championship, respectively. The luxury tea Illohyang was named winner of the North American Tea Championships for the fourth year running. What's more, OSULLOC gained recognition of the ways it has strengthened its presence as a premium tea brand in the world market with a clean sweep of top three spots in each category of the Championship.

Story of how OSULLOC reclaimed the tea garden

  • Seogwang Tea Garden on Jeju Island at present

As you all know, OSULLOC was started with the beautiful commitment of former ChairmanSuh Sung-whan to spread the tea culture. Determined to revive tea culture in Korea at a time when it had been disappearing, Mr. Suh launched a project to reclaim a tea garden on Jeju Island, which was no better than a wasteland at that time. Few took a positive view of the project due to economic infeasibility and business grounds, but he stood firm by countering that AMOREPACIFIC Group was a company which aimed to spread culture, rather than merely selling products. When the reclamation project was launched, Seogwang Tea Garden had neither transport access nor electricity. It was challenging to even find drinking water. Employees had to walk over three hours to get to where they needed to go, drink untreated rainwater and remove stones and grubby bushes by hand because no transportation was available to bring in any machines.

Yet, as the old saying goes, no land is bad for farmers who show industry and endeavor. Now, 30 years later after going through such hardships, toil and challenges, we are now in a position where we own and run a tea garden that coversan area of over 3,305,800m²on Jeju Island.

In March 2013, OSULLOC opened a new space for the experience of the tea culture named TEA STONE. OSULLOC TEA STONE embraces the beautiful commitment and aspiration of AMOREPACIFIC to revive, spread and bring the Korean tea culture into bloom just as our ancestors once expressed and spread culture and arts with Meok (ink stick) and Byeoru (ink stone). TEA STONE located at the right of OSULLOC Tea Museumis a tremendous draw with foreign tourists, particularly given its location – this is where Kim Jeong-hui,a famous tea lover during the Joseon period, was exiled.
TEA STONEregularly offers a tea therapy program for disabled and underprivileged people living on Jeju Island as a local CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) activity. Starting from October 2013, TEA STONE conducted total 46 CSR programs combining tea culture with therapy for mental and physical health with over 700 disabled and underprivileged people invited and, in doing so, spread the beautiful value of OSULLOC.
