Chapter 5. Signage in the new HQ

Introducing the new headquarters of Amorepacific situated in Korea

There are some essentials that we need for our fresh start in the new HQ in Yongsan, Seoul. One of them is signage. Here we will learn about signage; what it is and types of signs found in the new HQ.

What is signage?

In an initial encounter with a building, we see architectural elements and intuitively understand how they constitute the building. For example, when we see a large front door, we know that it's the main entrance and the stairs/escalators tell us that we can go upstairs. The flow of people through a building can also give us information; people head to the places where there is their office rooms or lifts. Visual signs are also a source of information and these signs include arrows and text showing us the direction to a specific location and room number plate that we see when we look for a meeting room. Likewise, signage is the use of text, sign, symbol and number to provide certain information.

Design concept of signage for the new HQ

There will be corporate signage, AMOREPACIFIC, at the top of the main entrance on the 1st floor of the new HQ. In general, a large corporate name plate is placed at the top of the exterior wall of corporate headquarters building. (Our Signature Camp has the name plate as well.) But, the new HQ does not have external signage. Instead, our uniquely designed building will tell itself that it is the headquarters of Amorepacific. The underlying idea is that architectural elements and the flow of people through the new HQ will help people know much information (as mentioned earlier) and, therefore, signage does not need to provide all kinds of information, but only essential information through text, numbers and symbols.
  • The AMOREPACIFIC sign at the top of the main entrance to the new HQ

Passing through the main entrance, there will be a LED panel sign at the top of the help desk in the atrium to inform about major events. And, another number sign in front of the lift hall inside. As described in the last column, there will be four cores in the new HQ with twin lifts and single lift and each will be marked with I, II, III and IV.
  • Testing a sample of LED panel sign at the top of the help desk

There will be a sign giving directions just like a compass on the top floors. This sign is made up of symbols, each indicating Han River, Namsan, Yongsan Park and Hangang-ro (downtown area) bordering the new HQ. This will tell you in which direction you are facing when in the new HQ building, whose four sides all look the same.
  • Sample of each sign

At the moment, the last sample work is underway for signage in the new HQ. Signs are made of reflective mirror material in harmony with the surroundings and the direction sign with graphic elements will be located on each floor.

It's a building itself or people inside the building that truly represent the building; or perhaps things that people experience and create from within. But, one thing is clear, signage cannot represent anything beyond its scope. It's beautiful when it's a more natural part of the building, comes into notice when needed, but doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. Please look forward to our signage in harmony with many other elements of the new HQ.
