Introducing the new headquarters of Amorepacific situated in Korea
With the relocation of Amorepacific Korean HQ scheduled at the end of this year, News Square will introduce stories about the new headquarters in Korea every month. If you have any questions besides our column, please leave a comment. We will collect and answer the questions in one go.
# Story about the design of the new headquarters
It is known that architect David Chipperfield drew inspiration from the 'courtyard' and 'corridor' both serving as a neutral zone between building and nature in the Korean traditional architecture. It is perhaps for that reason the new headquarters seems to represent a structure of 'a singular clear volume' with a courtyard. Instead of piling up an imposing high building, he chose to focus on the massing at the low level blending in its surroundings.

As you have seen through a bird's-eye view, there is large open space at the new headquarters. It presents a great view of the surroundings and, at the same time, adds to the massing of the structure. Moreover, the open space brings natural light into each floor.

The ground level of the not-too-high building is open and transparent. Full-height front glass panes allow visibility to the inside of the building and the wide atrium lobby represents two of 'Our Values': 'Openness' and 'Proximity.'

The new headquarters will represent a new landmark of Yongsan, the center of Seoul, Korea in harmony with the new public park, which has been transformed from old facilities around. Museum and library at the ground floor will be open to the public for a contribution to the local community and better communication with people.
As the outpost and the global headquarters of Amorepacific moving toward a Great Company, it will bring all the facilities of Amorepacific Group together. # People working for construction of the new headquarters
Besides Corp. Build. Construction Division, 30 local partners involved with construction and supervision and about 300 employees are working together. Among all, Amorepacific Corp. Build. Construction Division directs the entire process – from planning and designing, through to construction and maintenance after completion in cooperation with partners. Now that 10 years of preparation and three years of construction are coming to an end, let's hear what members of Corp. Build. Construction Division have to say about the project, work and attitude toward the given job.
- "As PM (Project Manager) in charge of the project, it's my responsibility to streamline the way Amorepacific Control Tower and partners including DCA responsible for designing and design supervision, constructor Hyundai Engineering & Construction and supervisor Kunwon Engineering, work together in order to ensure project success. Amorepacific Corp. Build. Construction Division Corp. Build. Construction 1 Team
Corp. Build. Construction 1 Team manages the project schedule, expenses, design of each construction work* and quality of construction. They use Aconex, document sharing and management software that's built for construction and engineering to directly and effectively communicate with 300 workers involved with the project. They also developed 'AP Review Request System' (total five steps: review request from AP – constructor writing report – supervisor reviewing the report – AP making decisions – budget assignment) for fast, accurate and efficient decision making process and consultation during construction.
*Construction work: Each type of special construction work, for example engineering work, curtain wall work, mechanical work and lighting system construction

Since I handle restrooms and parking spaces, two of the most commonly used spaces by members of Amorepacific who actually use the building, I will put my best effort until the day of relocation."
"I manage the construction of essential facilities in the new headquarters, including machine equipment, fire fighting equipment, auto control, gas supply, cooling and heating facilities and sanitary arrangements. With my experience of performing a number of construction projects, I will make sure that members of Amorepacific work without any inconvenience at the new headquarters after its completion."

Corp. Build. Construction 2 Team is dedicated to creating an innovative and advanced working environment through interior, furniture, signage*, space planning and management. In the belief that the interior is not mere decoration, but rather an essential element to bring about a positive effect about people in that space, they pay attention to details. They have implemented the needs of users through continuous communication with many different teams from the very beginning of the project.
* Signage : Direction board, post, display and all different types of signs collectively, for example Amorepacific nameplate on the exterior of the building, floor marking and door (office) signs

"I do coordination work involved with the interior of the new headquarters (1st floor, conference room, museum and office on the 3rd floor, lounge on the 11th floor), furniture on low floors and museum. Back in 2009 when the planning of the new headquarters began, the completion seemed a lifetime away, but there are now only a few months left. I feel very strange and yet I'm excited to see it.
