Beauty of Korea and China Told by a Plastic Surgery Specialist

Chapter 3. The craze for cosmetic surgery in Korea and China
In search of a petite face

People today want a petite face

Since I've started appearing on TV shows, I've been able to see several TV stars up close. One of the first things I noticed was that they all have a very small face. In fact, their faces are so unbelievably small that many think they must be the result of cosmetic surgery.
Regardless of whether their faces are naturally small or the result of cosmetic surgery, TV audiences have become used to thinking of famous people as having small faces and many have sought to emulate this standard of beauty. 'Making a small face' has become a cultural phenomenon that has cascaded into 'Facial Contouring Surgery.'

Why does the face look bigger?

Prominent cheekbones, particularly side cheekbones, can make the face look bigger. The square jaw also makes the face look bigger, giving it a stubborn look. There is in fact a way to make a face look smaller without undergoing bone surgery. Raising the bridge of the nose can make the face look smaller because of the nose's location in the center of the face. Exposing the iris of the eyes can also help.
There are two types of prominent cheekbones: either the side cheekbones or the front cheekbones tend to be prominent. Underdeveloped front cheekbones or protruding side cheekbones makes the face look bigger. Mongolian people tend to have slightly oblique eyes and protruding cheekbones. Some western men like the face of Asian women because of the high cheekbones. Yet, ironically, the typical Mongolian features are not popular in Asia, which shows that Asian people have become used to the Caucasian face.

Making a small face with medical help

A plastic surgeon can perform an osteotomy inside the mouth to correct the protruding zygomatic arch. The front end of the zygomatic arch is resected from the zygoma and the back end of the zygomatic arch is cut and pushed inward through the incision to the front of the ear. The zygomatic arch that was pushed inward should be fixed to prevent it from moving downward.
Not only protruding cheekbones, but also underdeveloped front cheekbones can make a person look older. Semi-permanent fillers such as artefill by AESTURA, as well as fat transfer, or artificial implants can easily correct depressed front cheekbones.

The masticatory muscles are used for eating. When these muscles are overly developed, it can make the jaw look square and the face look bigger. Many women are worried about having a square jaw. Square jaw surgery takes a similar approach. An intraoral incision is made and the protruded part is removed in a triangular shape. It makes a slender face line, but some people want to make the line longer and sharper. This creates an inverted triangle face shape. It may be considered as a matter of preference, but this so-called 'sharpening' is controversial with plastic surgeons over its safety.

Zygomaplasty (Facial Contouring Surgery) fever, should we follow suit?

Facial contouring surgery is obviously very popular in Korea. Even though the most popular form of cosmetic surgery has shifted from a surgical approach to procedural approach, facial contouring surgery has become somewhat of an exception. Many seem to think that the only way to change the facial shape is facial contouring surgery, which is a surgical approach that resects and readjusts the upper and the lower jaw, where the teeth are.

This is in fact a very difficult and complicated surgery, which is traditionally performed to correct the protruding chin in which the lower jaw extends forward beyond the upper jaw, with the top and lower teeth consequently not aligning properly. However, it has recently become more common, with people choosing to undergo the surgery for simple aesthetic reasons. Post-surgery can be problematic because the top and lower teeth should be fixed in occlusion for over a month. Patients cannot eat well during this period and they face some risks, as well as physical pain. Despite this, more people are choosing facial contouring surgery. The strength of the desire among many Koreans to be beautiful is something that continues to surprise me.

Makeup that achieves a 'cosmetic surgery' effect, as well as a face roller, expensive meridian massage, and even facial contouring surgery are all in vogue as people seek to create the impression of a smaller face, showing the great desire in Korea for this look. Contouring makeup has been a recent hit in social media. Contouring makeup can make the face look smaller and it's one of the ways to stay on-trend!
