Chapter 2. The original and still the best Beauty Creator



ABC POMADE, the first vegetable pomade in Korea, as well as ABC GinSeng CREAM, the world's first cream made from ginseng and IOPE AIR CUSHION, which created the Cushion category in the world – all these products bear witness to the history that AMOREPACIFIC has made over the past 70 years.

Behind the story of AMOREPACIFIC's origins and our ascent to lead the Korean beauty industry, lies the perspiration and toil of countless researchers, whose relentless spirit has helped to maximize research investment under the strategic direction of farsighted executives.

In this chapter, we take a look at some of the momentous turning points in the history of AMOREPACIFIC and our journey to bring beauty to people around the world with our long-lasting innovation DNA.


Camellia Oil, the naissance of research

The starting point of research at AMOREPACIFIC dates back to the camellia oil that was made by Yun Dok-jeong, the mother of company founder Suh Sung-whan. Yun made camellia oil to complete the beauty of women. She worked hard to travel a thousand miles to get fresh camellia seeds, guided by her firm belief that the best quality comes from good ingredients.

the first vegetable pomade in Korea

AMOREPACIFIC made the first vegetable pomade in Korea by using a vegetable ingredient, castor oil, in the midst of the Korean War. ABC POMADE was made with a rapid cooling technique that addressed the faults of previous pomade products such as stiff hair and grease, helping it to garner great popularity from customers.

the first cosmetics research center in Korea

The first Korean cosmetics research center was constructed in Huam-dong, Seoul, Korea, which marked the beginning of the AMOREPACIFIC R&D Center. Though the research center was about two pyeong (6.6116 m2) wide in a remodeled corner of the plant, it was nothing short of a paradigm shift in terms of the innovation it achieved at the time. The research center was then extended to a neighboring building, mounted with the latest facilities and took on the shape of the true research center in a remarkably short space of time. ABC Black (dye) and ABC Perm Agent, launched in the late 1950s, marked the first successes of the research center.

a new path in Korean herbal medicinal cosmetics

As a result of research on ginseng that began in 1964, AMOREPACIFIC launched the world's first Korean herbal medicinal cosmetics, ABC GinSeng Cream in 1966. Following this success, AMOREPACIFIC knuckled down to further develop Korean herbal medicinal cosmetics. In 1972, the group succeeded in extracting a saponin (ginsenoside)-rich ingredient from the leaves and flowers of ginseng and, in 1973, it stabilized saponin within a cosmetic formula, which went on to become GINSENG SAMMI, a cosmetic product made from ginseng saponin.

R&D Center with enhanced research competence

The research center built in Huam-dong, Seoul, Korea in 1954 was extended into Pacific R&D Center in 1978, continuing the proud tradition of quality that is the backbone of the AMOREPACIFIC.

Miro, a cosmetic product made from green tea

AMOREPACIFIC revealed the effectiveness of green tea in suppressing oxygen free radicals in the skin and used this insight to develop Miro, which was the first cosmetic product in the world to use green tea as an ingredient.

Sungjigwan built for Asian Beauty

Pacific Central R&D Center (now Sungjigwan) was constructed in Yongin, Gyeonggi-do, Korea. Originally the Central R&D Center, its name was changed to the R&D Center in 1995. Through unstinting investment into cutting-edge research, AMOREPACIFIC R&D Center has been able to bring about many remarkable innovations.

the first retinol stabilization in the world

Efforts to develop functional whitening and anti-aging cosmetics came to fruition in 1996 with the world's first stabilized retinol, which is the core ingredient of anti-wrinkle cosmetics. Then, in 1997, IOPE RETINOL 2500 was unveiled. Our expertise with retinol once again proved the outstanding technological prowess of AMOREPACIFIC, as retinol is a technology that delivers anti-oxidative ingredients typified by vitamin A (retinol) into human skin to amplify the effectiveness of functional cosmetics.

the first National Research Laboratory in the Korean cosmetics industry

The R&D Center was designated as a National Research Laboratory by the Korea Institute of Science & Technology Evaluation and Planning with funding provided for research into selective absorption technology using nano-structures, the first country-level core technical field in the beauty industry.

creation of the world's first Cushion category

To develop a light fluid that does neither get cakey nor run down, R&D Center completed cell-trap technology, which uses nano-structures to put fluid into a sponge. IOPE AIR CUSHION, which is made using cell-trap technology, is recognized as an innovative product that has created the cushion category for the first time in the world beauty industry.

acquired the international laboratory accreditation

The R&D Center has been acknowledged as an international accredited testing laboratory by the Korean Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (KOLAS) under the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards for the testing of six items in the cosmetics field, including phthalate (a material used as a chemical additive, such as plastic). This phthalate testing method, which was the first cosmetics testing method to be recognized in the history of the Korean beauty industry, is an analysis method developed by AMOREPACIFIC R&D Center with effectiveness proven by international standards, signifying public confidence at an international level.

constructed Mizium

The second R&D Center was named MIZIUM. Featuring the latest research facilities, it was constructed next to the first R&D Center, Sungjigwan. Its name MIZIUM has two meanings: first, the place (um) of wisdom (智 pronounced as Zi) pursuing beauty (美 pronounced as Mi); and, second, exploring the unknown (未知 pronounced as MIZI). Researchers at MIZIUM are dedicated to research and development of products that create new beauty.

named amongst the top 100 Korean technologies and leaders

AMOREPACIFIC's core technology – the world's first development of rare ginsenoside effective in anti-aging skin care – became the only technology in the Korean cosmetics industry to be named amongst the Korean top 100 technologies and leaders. This technology enables the mass-production of Compound K and Ginsenoside F1, rare ingredients found in red ginseng, and it is also used to make Sulwhasoo Concentrated Ginseng Renewing Cream and Essential Rejuvenating Eye Cream.

the first official Korean sponsor of the World Congress of Dermatology

AMOREPACIFIC sponsored and participated in the 22nd World Congress of Dermatology held at COEX in Seoul, Korea as the leading representative of the Korean beauty industry. AMOREPACIFIC was able through this, the largest academic event in the world beauty industry, to showcase our new aesthetic embracing the beauty of Asian and expand our professional network with dermatologists in large cities around the world. As such, the event has served to help AMOREPACIFIC undertake research and development projects while improving business operational capabilities worldwide.

renovation of Sungjigwan

Through renovation that aimed to install the most advanced facilities while maintaining the framework of the R&D Center, particularly the way it embraced the history of technological innovation, Sungjigwan was updated as a place combining the story of AMOREPACIFIC and the latest technologies.

AMOREPACIFIC strives to develop global innovative products based on our R&D Center in Korea and our five global R&D Institutes (in China, France, Japan, Singapore and the U.S.).

Shanghai R&D Institute

Built as a research institute affiliated to AMORE Cosmetics (Shanghai) Co., Ltd in 2004, it carried out customer research, research into cosmetics and healthy foods, regulations and licenses and C&D (Connect & Development). 2012 saw the organization of the Shanghai research branch and, since then, it has put efforts into bringing about technical innovation in order to provide beauty that's best suited for Chinese customers.

Chartres R&D Institute

Chartres R&D Institute is where the global brand Lolita Lempicka was born. It serves as an advance base in strengthening the presence of AMOREPACIFIC's brands in Europe and spreading the unique beauty of AMOREPACIFIC worldwide. Plus, it makes full use of local networks to pick up on the latest technical trends in France and other regions of Europe and enhance the technological prowess of AMOREPACIFIC.

Tokyo R&D Institute Tokyo R&D Institute has worked toward discovering and proposing new values across specialized technologies, methods and processes in different areas within Japan, in line with the product and technology innovation that's ongoing at the R&D Center in Korea. This collaboration has contributed significantly to the global expansion of AMOREPACIFIC.

Singapore R&D Institute Singapore R&D Institute promotes and manages various joint research initiatives to integrate the research findings of government-run research institutes and universities in Singapore and the ASEAN region with AMOREPACIFIC's development of innovative products while, at the same time, helping to improve understanding of the features of ASEAN customers' skin. It also serves as a goodwill ambassador for science and technology of AMOREPACIFIC, promoting our technical prowess and products to ASEAN customers.

The technologies that AMOREPACIFIC introduced for the first time in the world represent the best technologies in the history of world cosmetics and are worthy of close attention in their own right.

In the 70 years' journey that AMOREPACIFIC has walked from the moment that the first cosmetics research center was built, there has been unrelenting research and investment into making the best-quality products. The founding philosophy is still true: to want nothing more than to present beauty for customers.

This DNA of challenge, innovation and creation has continued to this day, making history in the world cosmetics market.
