Beauty of Korea and China Told by a Plastic Surgery Specialist

Chapter 2. A comparison of Korean and Chinese beauties

  • Yang Guifei, known as one of the most beautiful women in China (left), and Portrait of a Beauty by Shin Yoon-bok, the most famous portrait of beauty in Joseon Dynasty (right)
In the portrait of Yang Guifei, she has a sharp chin, small lips, high and sharp nose and slim waist. Her eyes slant upwards. But, the woman in Portrait of a Beauty by Shin Yoon-bok is certainly different from Chinese beauty. A Korean beauty in the portrait has a round, smooth chin, cherry lips, thin eye brows and wide eyes with single eyelids.

How do Korean and Chinese beauties look today?

China is a big country and it can sometimes seem that there are as many beauties as there are people. Nonetheless, the celebrity pictures that Chinese women bring to Korean plastic surgery clinics are always the same: Fan Bingbing, Yang Mi and Angelababy.

One thing Chinese beauties have in common in terms of their face shape is that they all have a pointy, inverted triangle-shaped face. In general, the facial contours are defined by the cheekbones and jawbone shape, while the chin line of Chinese beauties is typically rather pointy than slim. In fact, a wide and square-shaped chin creates an image of stubbornness that is often regarded as a masculine facial feature. For that reason, the ideal face shape of Korean beauties is not square-shaped. Nevertheless, Korean women do not like a pointy chin as much as a square-shaped chin because they think the pointy chin looks unnatural. This is the reason Korean women prefer an oval shaped face.

Does makeup preference differ depending on the beauty standards?

Clear, big and well-defined eyes that look as if they're capturing so many things are the envy of all women. And on this account, the eye makeup of Chinese beauties is unique. They like so-called smokey eye makeup that involves putting eye shadow all the way from eye lashes to the outermost corner of the eyes, and sometimes even under the eyes. It means that the eyes seem to cover a large proportion of the whole face after makeup. It is like a panda engrosses love of Chinese and people all over the world because of their deep, big and wide eyes.

Moreover, Chinese beauties have thick and deep double eyelid. The average height of the eyelids of Chinese women who come to Korea to do eyelid surgery again is 10-13mm, whereas Korean women have an average eyelid height of 7-9mm. Looking at pictures of Yang Mi, one of most famous beauties in China, you can see that with thick double eyelid and smokey eye makeup, her eyes take a high proportion on the face.

Fan Bingbing, by contrast, has such sharp medial canthus (the innermost corner of the eyes; where epicanthoplasty is performed) that red flash at the corner is visible. Her eyes look more like typical Westerner's eyes and create a defiant look. Her pointy chin (with no secondary angle) and high and straight-edged nose are some of the most distinctive facial features of Chinese beauties.

Then what about Korean beauties? Park Shin-hye, who now works as a model for Mamonde, has a double eyelid that goes well with her lovely plump face and tender, big eyes. Her demure face has a more comfortable appearance than the point chin of Chinese beauties, which looks somewhat aggressive by contrast. And natural makeup looks better than the heavy, smokey makeup favored by Chinese beauties.

Of course, there are Korean celebrities who have thick double eyelid, a sharp chin and inverted triangle-shaped face like Chinese beauties. An example of one such Korean celebrity is Sulli, a member of Korean girl group, f(x) and a model for ETUDE HOUSE. Though Korean, she has a long, sharp chin (with no secondary angle) and a thick double eyelid that give her a beauty more in keeping with Chinese beauty standards.

Now, the nose, which sits at the center of the face, determines a person's overall image. A high (straight-edged) on a big face makes the face look smaller, whereas a high (straight-edged) nose on a small face creates an air of arrogance and authority. In general, Korean beauties have a nose size that goes well with their face, but Chinese beauties seem to have a smaller nose, as their eyes take a high proportion on their face. However, the width of one eye and the width of nose are same, which means that the ratio of the width of one eye to the width of the nose to the width of one eye is 1:1:1.
  • Though everyone has the same ratio of both eyes to the nose, the preferred ratio differs depending on the beauty standards of Korean and Chinese.

Plastic surgeons have to continue working hard to make women beautiful with the help of medical technologies when they come to their clinic, while AMOREPACIFIC Group, a leader in beauty culture across Asia and Korea, has to understand the ideal beauty and beauty trends in each country so that women can make themselves beautiful through makeup.
