# Introduction

Hello! I'm Kim Yeo-hoon from Premium Makeup Team and, in this column, I'd like to share with you the inside track on the hottest global makeup trends.

You may not know about the Premium Makeup Team since we were in fact only launched last year. Our motto is "For premium makeup, from start to finish" and we provide assistance and support to teams under Premium BU who are involved with makeup. Given the primacy of makeup in our works, it's perhaps no surprise that makeup artists are indispensable to our team. We have five makeup artists who each spend over six months out of every year promoting and spreading K-beauty abroad.

On behalf of our makeup artists who have a good knowledge of makeup and stay up to date with the latest beauty trends, I would like to bring you global makeup news and makeup tips.

# 2016 makeup trends in Korea

Every woman, no matter how old she is or where in the world she calls home, desires to look young, healthy and beautiful. The latest makeup trends in Korea reflect this essential feminine desire. This year, makeup for young and healthy looking skin is in, and one of the hottest makeup techniques is strobing.

Similar to contouring, which was quite popular last year, strobing is a makeup technique used to create a glowing dimension. Derived from the word 'strobe,' meaning a very bright light, strobing is all about helping the skin glow.

While contouring involves using one shade darker than the skin tone to chisel the facial features, strobing adds glow to the high points of the face to give the fame dimension. The images below will help you understand the difference between contouring and strobing.

The key point of strobing makeup can be seen in the areas of the face where the light naturally hits, for example cheekbones, forehead, bridge of the nose and cheeks. That's because, compared to contouring, it makes the skin look healthier with a dewy glow.

It's better to use a moist-textured highlighter rather than a dry powder-type with a matte finish. First, prepare the skin well and then use the shimmer of a highlighter to get a more flattering strobing look.

# Trends in Japan and China

In Japan, Igari Makeup, also known as hangover makeup, continues to be all the rage. This makeup style was first introduced last year by makeup artist Igari Shinobu through TV and magazines and soon became one of the hottest makeup trends in Japan.

More and more Korean women are now trying out this style. The key is a bold touch of blush, placed in an inverted triangle shape under the eyes. Lip and eye makeup should be kept to a minimum, with blush accentuated to create a feminine, innocent and pure "girly girl" image.

For women in China, the classical ideal of beauty is a face with well-defined, sharp features. The country is expected to see a trend for exquisite and yet glamorous makeup sweeping the country following the release of the film Lady of the Dynasty featuring the famous actress Fan Bingbing. The signature of this Yang Guifei-inspired makeup typified by Fan Bingbing is luscious red lips with long, sharp lines along the eyes.

It's a style that may be worth trying for a special day. If you find it too much to accentuate both lips and eyes, tone down the red lips, just like Fan Bingbing does. It will make the makeup all the more wearable and glamorous.

# Eye dot craze sweeping the US

An interesting makeup trend spreading online through beauty YouTubers is the under eye dot, which is a craze that has really taken off in America. As its name implies, it involves putting small dots under both eyes. It looks quite unique, suggestive of Kenzo model in the early 2000s, as well as of Natalie Portman in her portrayal of Queen Amidala in the Star Wars saga.

Various under eye dot looks using colored eyeliner have been presented on the runways of the world's fashion capitals and women are now using black or brown eyeliner to get a more natural look. Since it gives an accent to the eyes, the key is to dab a blob of eyeliner as close as possible to the lower water line after drawing lines along the eyes and curling up the lashes.

But, remember to make sure that the dots under each eye are symmetrical and that the size of the dots is not too big so that the look you create stays both unique and mysterious. Plus, the combination of pencil and brush type eyeliners helps make the dots look more natural and realistic.

In the UK, fake freckle makeup is growing popular, as introduced by a famous Korean makeup artist on a TV show. It involves adding color to the cheeks using orange or bronze blush and then fake freckles using eyeliner/eyebrow pencil. Topshop, the famous British SPA brand, has even released the Topshop Freckle Pencil for drawing a unique sun-kissed smattering of freckles.

Search Instagram with the hashtag #fakefrecklemakeup or #fauxfreckle and you will find hundreds of images of people wearing fake freckle makeup. Orange/bronze blush with freckles not only creates a healthy, playful and fun look, but also goes perfectly with a vintage and sporty style. It's particularly well featured in magazines and on models backstage.

# To conclude

Now I've given a brief outline of the latest makeup trends in Korea, China, Japan, America and the UK. Some seem to be easy and wearable next morning, but some are perhaps a little too bold. But, if you change little by little, you will be able to find the style that looks good on you and perhaps create a new image of yourself.
