#Foreigner in Korea, Mashiko Mayu

EP8. The Joy of Documenting Everyday Life in Another Language

Amorepacific Daily Beauty Global Business Team Mashiko Mayu

Here, we have a Japanese who even sleep talks in Korean. Mashiko Mayu is an ‘almost’ Korean girl who knows the hidden gems of Hyehwa-dong and enjoys old K-pop from the 1980s and 1990s. Particularly drawn to K-beauty, her college participation in ETUDE’s external program ‘Beautizen’ as a first-generation member made her a beauty and daily life creator. Currently, she is responsible for the Japanese e-commerce platforms at Amorepacific, and her top five keywords are featured in My Hashtag.

#Qoo10 and Rakuten
I manage the hair brand mise-en-scène on the Japanese e-commerce platforms ‘Qoo10’ and ‘Rakuten.’ I focus on designing the banners and planning the promotions. We also conduct marketing campaigns with influencers. Last year, I was proud to see the mise-en-scène Perfect No Wash Water Treatment sell over 1,000 units in just the first ten minutes of a campaign-themed ‘King of Negotiation’ with Japanese influencer Maruoka Etsuko.

#Beautizen Generation 1
During my university years, I participated in ETUDE’s creator-nurturing program ‘Beautizen.’ It was my first involvement with Amorepacific. I received training in video editing and uploaded review content of ETUDE products every month. I once won a prize for a video I filmed wearing a Japanese school uniform. It was a precious experience that bolstered my confidence as a content creator managing three social media platforms, from YouTube to Instagram and my blog.

#Foreigner in Korea
I have been living in Korea for nearly ten years now. Originally from Tokyo, I became interested in Korea as a high school student when I liked the band FT Island and came to Korea as an exchange student during college. Subsequently, I transferred to a university in Seoul and started living here full-time. Fluent in Korean and thoroughly adapted to life in Seoul, people often call me ‘Kim Mayu.’ I recently obtained my Korean-Japanese legal interpreter’s certificate, and I’m looking forward to working with my Korean boyfriend, a police officer whom I will soon marry.

#Hyehwa-dong
Seoul’s charm lies in its Han River and numerous parks, which allow you to enjoy nature even within the city. I graduated from Sungkyunkwan University and still frequently visit Hyehwa-dong, where my college memories vividly reside. I love filling up at the affordable yet generous eateries around the university area and enjoying walking routes that take me to the beautiful Myeongnyundang Lecture Hall and Naksan Park.

#Old K-pop
I enjoy listening to old Korean songs like Song Gol Mae’s ‘A Chance Encounter’ and Zoo’s ‘I Will Love You.’ I also visit record shops that still hold old LPs and CDs. The nostalgic and comforting vibes of old songs appeal to me. As a child in Japan, I learned traditional drumming, and I enjoy watching traditional musical performances at places like the Folk Village and Gyeongbokgung Palace. I hope more people will discover the rich beauty of traditional culture.
