The Cyclical Nature of Fashion: The Return of Colorful Makeup?

Editor’s note

In recent seasons, the global fashion houses have largely adhered to a monochromatic palette, reflecting the somber mood of our times—a response to mounting climate concerns and societal challenges. Yet, as if mirroring spring’s regenerative power, this season’s collections herald the return of saturated hues. The collections share a common thread: while embracing chromatic diversity, they maintain a singular focus. Rather than incorporating a cacophony of colors, each look emphasizes one distinctive feature. Color mascara makes its triumphant return, while primary hues grace the face with striking directness. In the local market, influenced by fall/winter collections, we’re seeing a prevalence of the “Demure Core” aesthetic: quiet, composed looks featuring simple, earthy tones. This trend aligns with the ongoing preference for natural, unaffected beauty.

As the axiom “Beauty Trend Is Everywhere” suggests, contemporary beauty trends proliferate across all platforms. However, just as the purest form often proves most compelling, the beauty trends that consistently emerge from fashion collections—where originality reigns supreme—offer the most reliable forecast of future product directions and makeup aesthetics. After all, local interpretations invariably stem from these collection trends.

In light of this, we present our analysis of makeup trend observations from the 2025 Spring/Summer Runway Collections.

1. Harmonizing Shades with Orange and Pink

The interplay of color on transparent skin creates an enigmatic effect. While last season saw an unabashed embrace of pink tones, this season introduces a more nuanced approach, with subtle undertones of pink and orange creating an ethereal atmosphere. The dominant colors emerging in each collection invariably reflect the zeitgeist. As we grapple with escalating international tensions and environmental concerns, these fresh spring hues emerge as if in defiance, offering a base of resilience. The gentle suffusion of pink and orange evokes notions of recovery, elasticity, and warmth. This season’s looks, while serene and composed, feature significantly lighter color applications, resulting in an overall more delicate makeup aesthetic. Yet rather than adhering to a single tone, many looks feature a natural diffusion of dual chromatic elements.

A word of caution regarding base makeup: excessive attention to foundation can result in an overly heavy application. The key to achieving a flawless yet lightweight complexion lies in carefully selecting one or two products that genuinely complement your skin. Maintaining smooth skin texture is essential for that coveted natural glow. HERA’s Rejuvenate Ampoule Cream delivers radiant, firm skin tailored for early anti-aging care.

2. Shimmer and Shine

The season witnesses a fascinating convergence of utopian, luminescent glitter makeup and dystopian cyberpunk aesthetics. The futuristic elements continue to influence makeup trends, with cyberpunk sensibilities maintaining their hold. While the 2025 Resort season’s eye makeup is centered on metallic textures and glitter, this season’s distinctive feature incorporates white or blue-tinted glitter for a cooler effect, regardless of the color palette.

This season’s lips remain deliberately pale or touched with just a hint of crimson, careful not to overshadow the eye makeup’s focal points. While recent seasons appeared to embrace maximal makeup as a megatrend, closer inspection reveals a more nuanced approach: emphasizing a single point for overall refinement while consciously reducing other elements. The result is a concentrated application of texture and color in specific areas.

For those struggling with glitter adherence on dry skin, try mixing solid eyeshadow or glitter with a setting spray or fixer to enhance pigmentation and longevity. When applying cream eyeshadow, fingers often prove superior to brushes, minimizing product fallout and ensuring direct texture transfer for a consistent color payoff from any angle. ETUDE’s My Best Tone Eye Palette in ‘Okay Gray’ offers a comprehensive range from light to sophisticated smoky shades, enabling diverse eye makeup looks suitable for streetwear.

3. Vivid Fuchsia Lip

Breaking from last season’s predilection for nude pinks and primary reds, this season spotlights intense fuchsia pink and its adjacent hues. Innovative application techniques complement this bold venture into less conventional pop colors. Close inspection reveals deliberate overdrawn upper and lower lip lines or strategic under-drawing, creating artfully manipulated shapes. Notably absent is the glossy finish characteristic of clean beauty lip looks. Instead, the focus remains squarely on pastel variations of fuchsia pink, magenta, and lavender, perfectly aligned with the vibrant sensibilities of spring and summer. The unified matte texture from skin to lips eliminates unwanted shine while creating a modern, chic aesthetic through consistent textural harmony.

4. Non-Black Mascara

Eye makeup has evolved beyond disco punk into something more dynamically expressive, with colors that shift and play with every blink. While the 2025 Resort collection incorporated metallic textures into eye shadows, this season distinguishes itself through the bold mixing of neon and primary colors. The result is minimal yet impactful. Makeup artist Sofia Schwarzkopf pioneered a distinctive technique: applying mascara and tweezers to create web-like lash clusters and adding another layer of mascara for dramatic effect and using objets d’art. Exaggerated eye makeup with diverse colors is evident throughout—from Kiko Kostadinov’s deconstructed lash placement to the coordinated lash and eyeshadow colors in Dries Van Noten and Ganni’s presentations.

The evolution of lash trends follows a cyclical pattern: from Spring/Summer 2024’s ‘Mascara Cocktail’ to Fall/Winter 2024’s ‘Natural Eyelash’ and Spring/Summer 2025’s ‘Colorful Eyelash.’ This progression cycles consistently between full and natural makeup.

Current daily makeup trends favor a softer approach, maintaining bold lips and blush while eschewing mascara entirely. This suggests that next year’s lash trends will likely showcase even greater diversity.

5. Orangish Blusher

We’re witnessing nothing short of an orange renaissance. Where pink undertones dominated previous seasons, this season marks a complete chromatic shift. The aesthetic has evolved from sweet romanticism to fresh vibrancy. Blushers and eye shadows now feature gradual gradients that expand the color spectrum, abandoning the conventional wisdom that blush should maintain a single uniform shade in favor of dual-tone combinations.

This approach harmonizes beautifully with crimson lips, as the previously discussed interplay of pink and orange diffuses across the entire face. It’s worth noting that orange-tinted blushers and shadows have traditionally been perceived as challenging for Asian skin tones, with concerns about emphasizing yellow undertones. As an artist, I frequently field questions about base tones—clients often worry about yellow undertones when recommended neutral (N) shades, assuming anything besides cool (C) will skew too warm. While neutral tones offer universal compatibility, sensitivity to yellow undertones remains valid. However, when adequately modulated, yellow can create sophisticated effects—consider how inherently yellow-based gold has become a marker of luxury. Moreover, contouring products, which often contain brown undertones, can be combined with other colors to create subtle, refined dimensions. As orange emerges as a leading earthy tone, we recommend experimenting with it in eye and cheek applications.

6. Whitish Eye Makeup

The convention of defining eye corners with black has been decisively disrupted. Instead, white—black’s polar opposite—now extends the eye area. Given that the human eye naturally consists of black and white elements, using white creates an eye-opening effect visible from a distance. While incorporating white into eye makeup has traditionally been considered challenging, it creates an intriguingly ethereal makeup aesthetic when paired with clear skin. This also explains the popularity of ultra glitter—the way light refracts creates a whitish sparkle that many perceive as enhancing eye beauty. Following this principle, the Spring/Summer season’s eye makeup incorporates white shadow or liner. To maintain focus on the eye area makeup, brows are kept thin and light in a “Bare Brow” style. The look is completed by precisely grooming or bleaching brows to create a striking contrast with the white eye makeup.

7. Lip Maximalist

Vivid, intense lip maximalist makeup commands attention this season. Moving beyond traditional coral and pink, the collections embrace more sensual shades like wine plum. While champagne-reminiscent purple lip colors typically dominate Fall/Winter collections, this Spring/Summer season unexpectedly features rich purple hues that pair perfectly with black attire.

Adding black to the vivid fuchsia colors previously discussed creates more profound, more sophisticated variations. The consistent pairing with black clothing and hair—a perennial fashion house favorite universally beloved by designers—speaks to restraint and self-protection, perhaps reflecting our collective response to environmental uncertainties. Both matte and glossy textures appear, with lip liners employed to create precisely defined lip shapes.

The collections showcase highly pigmented lip products in berry wine, plum mauve, and rose petal hues. There’s a biological basis for this preference—our lips naturally flush when attracted to someone, perhaps explaining our instinct to reach for intense lip colors when we wish to appear beautiful. primera’s Retinol Volume Lip Serum in #Shy Red provides fundamental elasticity care through its retinol-infused formula for optimal results before applying deep lip colors.
