Amorepacific becomes the first in the Korean beauty industry to achieve Zero Waste to Landfill

Amorepacific Osan Beauty Park became the first in the Korean beauty industry to receive Zero Waste to Landfill. The company achieved Silver level from UL Solutions, the global leader in the field of applied safety science, with a 94% diversion from landfill to resources, which amounts to 4,043 tons from 4,292 tons of waste.

Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWTL) is rooted in the concept of building a circular economy through the diversion of waste from landfill to resources. UL Solutions validates companies for their landfill waste diversion claims and requires at least a 90% diversion to achieve Zero Waste to Landfill (Silver 90-94%, Gold 95-99% and Platinum 100%).

Amorepacific has developed its own environmental performance index to manage the goals through waste reduction and diversion rate, and at the same time has put much effort into minimizing the environmental impact of waste. As part of its effort, regular visits are made to partners who are responsible for collecting and handling waste to check whether they comply with the applicable laws and regulations when handling waste.

Having earned ZWTL Silver Validation, Amore Beauty Park classifies production waste into total 21 types and recycles them using 12 waste diversion methods at its 542m2-wide recycling center. From 2021, more than half of the dust waste, which used to be sent to landfills, has been recycled for road construction, for example asphalt paving. There is also the Less Food Waste campaign in which all employees can participate. Through this campaign, Amorepacific managed to reduce 6% of food waste compared to the same period last year and raised environmental awareness of its employees.

Not only waste from day-to-day business operations, Amorepacific has also strived to reduce waste from the entire process of production. It developed a light-weight container using less plastic, while still delivering the same high quality as before, and also designed a pump that does not use a metal spring to make the bottle more readily recyclable. Empty cosmetic bottles are collected to be recycled or upcycled for the Green Cycle campaign, in its waste reduction effort. In the transportation stage, it replaced traditional plastic bubble wrap with FSC-certified paper buffer material and color-coated packaging boxes with craft boxes, and as a result, reduced about 70% of plastic use.

Amorepacific plans to further build infrastructure to reduce waste from all of its production sites, and explore ways to divert waste from landfill, improve its waste management process, and promote an in-house environmental campaign. Its plan also includes building a sustainable supply network to ensure good circulation of resources throughout the entire business operation from development to consumption, and reduce indirect greenhouse gas emissions from landfill waste.

This Zero Waste to Landfill is part of the AMORE Beautiful Promise that was declared last year, and it is working toward reducing manufacturing waste that goes to landfills as much as possible.
