Challenge? Tenacity? That's Our Daily Bread.

From Pacific to Amore #2 [The Pacific Dolphins Story]

From Pacific to Amore, Amorepacific has been the pioneer and leader in creating unparalleled beauty. It's common knowledge that Amorepacific's sports patronage dates back to its Pacific Chemical days—an extension of its corporate mission to "We make A MORE beautiful world" and a testament to its commitment to returning corporate profits back to society. This enduring passion for sports lives on today through the Pacific Dolphins, an employee baseball club whose members pursue their diamond dreams, symbolizing hard work, with the same determination that characterizes the company's spirit. Let's hear from these dedicated athletes about Amorepacific's legacy of challenge and perseverance.

Part 1.
The Golden Age of Pacific Sports

"Are You a Baseball Fan?"
Korean baseball recently achieved an unprecedented milestone: ten million spectators in a single season. The sport has transcended mere athletics to become a cultural phenomenon. What is it about baseball that captivates us so thoroughly? It captures the spirit of perseverance and tenacity. There's a saying in Korean baseball that "the game begins with two outs in the ninth"—a testament to baseball's unique capacity for dramatic reversals, where victory remains possible until the final out.

If this resonates with you, if baseball courses through your veins, then you've likely heard of the Pacific Dolphins. Founded in Incheon in 1988, the team embodied the sporting virtues of "challenge" and "tenacity," reaching the playoffs in their sophomore season in 1989—a remarkable achievement for a fledgling team. Under the leadership of the legendary Sung-keun Kim, a manager whose reputation precedes him even among casual fans, the Dolphins continued their ascent, culminating in a franchise-best 68 wins and a second-place finish in the 1994 Korean Series. Though the Pacific Dolphins as a professional team has since passed into the annals of history, devoted ‘baseball aficionados’ still cherish the graceful and radiant spirit of the Dolphins in Korean baseball.

Yet Amorepacific's sporting passion extended beyond the baseball diamond. The company believed in its corporate responsibility to revitalize Korea's athletic culture.
Before baseball, Pacific set its sights on basketball. In 1976, the Pacific Women's Basketball Team burst onto the scene as the tenth professional team in the league. They immediately made their mark, winning their debut game in the Spring Women's Corporate Basketball League and claiming the championship in the autumn tournament. The momentum continued after Sung-whan Suh assumed the presidency of the Korea Basketball Association in 1983. His innovative ‘Jumbo Series,’ which utilized the winter off-season for extended tournaments, significantly boosted professional basketball attendance. The following year brought an Olympic silver medal in women's basketball at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, followed by victory at the 10th Shanghai Asian Women's Basketball Championship—achievements that underscore Pacific's profound commitment to sports sponsorship.

The Pacific Dolphins: Still Making Waves

"Our Team Spirit is Second to None!"
The second episode of "From Pacific to Amore" spotlights the Pacific Dolphins, Amorepacific's baseball club where camaraderie runs deep. The baseball fever that swept through Amorepacific continues to burn bright. Since its formation in 2017, the Pacific Dolphins have sailed smoothly, leading Division 4 of the corporate amateur baseball league1).
Meet the key players: Young-jun Choi (Brand FBP Team, outfielder), Won-woo Jeon (Beauty Academy Team, catcher), and Hwi-young Jung (Brand FBP Team, catcher and manager). In their day jobs, they support brand finances and develop beauty education programs to enhance employee expertise and various content to nurture the company's beauty culture. As the company's longest-running club, the Pacific Dolphins has drawn passionate baseball enthusiasts from various departments. United by their love of the game, they're working tirelessly toward promotion to Division 3.

1) The corporate amateur baseball league in South Korea consists of players aged 18 and above with no professional experience. Although the league is typically divided into divisions 1 through 4 based on skill level, the criteria for classification are not strictly defined.

"Never Give Up, Always Challenge!"
When asked about the heritage that connects from Pacific to Amore, the Pacific Dolphins members offered distinct yet complementary perspectives. Young-jun Choi of the Brand FBP Team emphasized "unwavering determination." He noted that while neither Amorepacific nor the Pacific Dolphins experienced uninterrupted success, their refusal to give up led them to where they are today. Won-woo Jeon from the Beauty Academy Team highlighted "new challenges," pointing to Amorepacific's history of groundbreaking initiatives—establishing Korea's first cosmetics research laboratory, creating green tea plantations on Jeju Island, and developing ginseng-based cosmetics using cutting-edge technology. He added that the company's emphasis on employee skill development is another manifestation of this innovative spirit. Hwi-young Jung of the Brand FBP Team defined heritage as "passion and tenacity," citing an impressive quote from Chairman Sung-whan Suh's biography, in which he declared he would choose cosmetics again if given another life. Such dedication, Jung believes, shaped Amorepacific into what it is today.
Sports captivate and move us because we recognize that athletic excellence isn't born from fleeting moments but forged through consistent effort. The sporting spirit of perseverance, determination, and challenge mirrors our approach to our mission of creating beauty, propelling us forward. Small changes accumulate through persistent effort, building a heritage of ‘challenge’ and ‘tenacity.’
