[About Amorepacific Founder ‘Jangwon Sungwhan Suh (1924-2003)’]
True to his pseudonym Jangwon, which means “well-cultivated source of beauty,” Sungwhan Suh devoted his life to the cosmetics and green tea industries to cultivate beauty and health in Korea. Born in 1924 in Pyeongsan, Hwanghae Province, and raised in Kaesong, he inherited his family’s business of manufacturing and selling camellia hair oil in the 1930s. After Korea’s liberation in 1945, he founded Pacific Chemical, leading the Korean beauty culture with unparalleled technology, innovative products, distinctive advertising, and marketing strategies. A lover of plants and a dreamer of harmonious encounters between nature and humans, Suh was also a tea enthusiast who lamented the decline of Korea’s tea culture. He established tea plantations in Jeju and Honam, contributing significantly to the popularization of green tea. He also founded the Pacific Scholarship and Cultural Foundation, the Pacific Welfare Foundation, and the Pacific Museum, which continue to this day. Suh is remembered not only as a business leader but also as a corporate figure who fulfilled his social responsibilities for the growth and development of the local community.
