How to Shop for Sustainable Beauty Products

If you are out of beauty products, why don't you get some Earth-friendly products this April, also known as Earth Month? Not sure about which one to choose? Here are some useful product information.

1

Save your skin, save the Earth through upcycling!
primera Alpine Berry Watery Cream

primera has celebrated Earth Day, an annual event held in April, for ten years now through its ‘Love the Earth’ campaign. The brand sends an eco-friendly message with a limited edition every year and this time, its two best sellers Alpine Berry Watery Cream and Alpine Berry Watery Soothing Gel Cream starred in the campaign. In collaboration with global brand Nukak, which is committed to adding new value to waste materials through upcycling, Watery Cream Upcycling Edition offers a DIY Kit for customers to make a card wallet using spent banners. Through this upcycling edition, primera has managed to save 450kg of banners from being incinerated thus reducing nearly 1.2 tons of carbon emission. In addition, part of the proceeds from selling these editions will be donated to environmental organizations.

Keeping the water clean, for longer
LANEIGE Water Sleeping Mask EX

In October 2020, Water Sleeping Mask, one of LANEIGE's steady selling items, became the first in the Korean beauty industry to obtain PWF (Product Water Footprint) from Carbon Trust headquartered in the UK for measuring the water footprint and saving the total amount of water that is used in each step of the production process. With new packaging materials of the same quality as the old, but with less weight, LANEIGE has saved about 0.7L (10.9%) of water per product. The reduced total annual water consumption is about 1.3 times that of Olympic sized swimming pools (based on water usage of a 50m long, 21m wide and 1.98m deep).

3

Use of plastics made from plants
Hanyul Mentha Trouble Toner

Bio-PET is made from plant-derived resources, instead of oil, which is an exhaustible resource. It helps save natural resources that are only available in a limited quantity and reduce over 20% of carbon dioxide emissions in the production process. Hanyul uses plant-based plastic for its Mentha Trouble Toner containing mentha extract that removes excess sebum and dead skin cells to keep the skin looking bright and clear, and also for its Pure Artemisia Calming Cleansing Oil and Pure Artemisia Feminine Care Gel.

Steady-selling item going green with recycled plastics
innisfree No-Sebum Mineral Pact

innisfree has always strived to be a green brand and as part of that effort, it makes use of recycled plastics in product packaging. Having begun in 2019, innisfree expanded the use of recycled plastics into makeup product packagings including foundation, cushion compact and palette, in 2020. In particular, its steady-selling No-Sebum Mineral Pact converted the plastic (ABS) into 100% recycled for its packaging to integrate its green action into the everyday life routine of the customers.

5

Recycling every part of a product, even the pump
HAPPY BATH Grapefruit Essence Cooling Body Wash

HAPPY BATH uses 100% recycled plastics for the 2020 new version of its steady-selling Grapefruit Essence Cooling Body Wash to reduce plastic wastes. Its effort is put into not only the bottle, but also the wrap-around label. It has a pre-cut line, which makes it easier to peel off and separate for recycling. Another effort that has been made is metal-zero pump. The metal spring, which was previously used to pump up the content inside, has been removed from the pump by replacing the metal with plastic and means that the entire bottle can be thrown into the recycling bin without having to separate each part.

A smart way to use only what's needed

Amorepacific Group has opened the very first Refill Station in the Korean beauty industry and it is located at its Amore Store Gwanggyo. This Refill Station offers an eco-friendly refill bottle that uses 30% less plastic and invites customers to fill up the bottle with 15 kinds of products including shampoo and body wash, as much as they need. Products are displayed for up to 100 days from the date of being opened and the bottle goes through a sterilization process under LED light before being refilled to keep products inside fresh and safe for customers.
