Amorepacific and BASF Jointly Develop UV Protection Technology to Combat Skin Aging

- New Sun Care Technology Blocks Free Radical Formation, Utilizing BASF's Expertise in Evaluation

Amorepacific has partnered with BASF, a leading global chemical company specializing in UV protection ingredients, to develop the innovative antioxidant UV protection technology UV-R Pro, designed to effectively slow down skin aging. The agreement for this joint technology development was signed on the afternoon of March 13th at Amorepacific's headquarters in Yongsan-gu, Seoul.

While numerous studies have explored the ability of sunscreens to prevent photoaging, most have concentrated on blocking UV rays at the skin's surface. Recently, however, greater emphasis has been placed on UVA (long-wave ultraviolet radiation). UVA rays are known to penetrate deeply into the skin, damaging the dermal layer and contributing to visible signs of skin aging.

To combat skin aging caused by UV radiation penetrating the skin, Amorepacific's R&I Center focused on free radicals – harmful substances produced within the skin upon exposure to UVA. By incorporating an antioxidant system specifically engineered for UV protection, they created a sun care technology that effectively inhibits the formation of these free radicals.

Amorepacific used BASF's Radical Skin Protection Factor (RSF) evaluation technology to validate the effectiveness of products featuring this new technology. Through iterative technical enhancements aimed at maximizing skin protection, the advanced antioxidant UV protection technology, UV-R Pro, was perfected. This achievement also provides a platform for developing products that not only offer UV protection but also strengthen the skin's defense against the fundamental causes of photoaging, thereby slowing the skin aging process. The newly developed UV-R Pro technology is slated for integration into a range of sun care products, beginning with the HERA brand this April.

"Through our ongoing collaboration with BASF, a global leader in the chemical industry, Amorepacific will establish a new benchmark for selecting UV protection products that promote slowed skin aging for customers worldwide, and drive product innovation in the global sun care market," said Brian Byung-Fhy Suh, CTO of Amorepacific's R&I Center. He added, "We remain committed to pursuing research that delivers groundbreaking slow-aging sun care solutions to customers around the globe who are concerned about photoaging."

Agus Ciputra, Senior Vice President of Global Personal Care Solutions, Care Chemicals, BASF, emphasized, "This partnership with Amorepacific represents a significant and mutually beneficial joint innovation. Building on this momentum, we will continue to introduce cutting-edge sun care solutions and solidify our competitive edge in the global sun care market."
