261 Pieces of Reality

by Gary Webb

Shim Jin-sol, AMOREPACIFIC Museum of Art

Art has always adapted to reflect the changing times and social forces in various ways. Even though contemporary art seems abstract, when one looks at it carefully, one can see the way that the artist has sought to reflect a view of reality through the artwork. Gary Webb's contains 261 realities. Those slightly different angles of mirrors create different views and make the audiences come up with diverse interpretations.

"The piece must always contain reality – in whatever form it might be.
Things like you see every day."
- Gary Webb

The underground lobby of AMOREPACIFIC R&D Center MIZIUM welcomes visitors with an interesting artwork. It's a sculpture named by Gary Webb, which describes our daily life from new angles. Depending on from where you look at the sculpture, you either feel like that you have two heads or that the floor is on the ceiling.

Made from 261 mirrors colored in orange, green and blue, every mirror is set at irregular angles. The way the artist made this sculpture is testament to his experimental attitude. That's because a mirror is a familiar material that everybody has and it reflects reality the way it is. However, with a sculpture made from mirrors, the artist has retranslated reality.

is influenced by the new generation movement which emerged in 1960's Britain. Influenced by this movement, Webb too breaks away from traditional sculpture; hence, in the sculpture he didn't use any of the materials you would find in traditional sculptures, such as marble or clay. Instead, he explored new shapes and artificial colors. Even though he didn't totally follow the new generation movement, his deep exploration for materials has had a huge influence on modern sculpture materials, such as mirrors, steels, aluminum, glasses and plastic.

As its name indicates, the place where the artwork is displayed has influenced the name of his "Split series." That's because Webb sets a high value on the relationship between his artwork and its surrounding area. This is the reason that he doesn't name his artworks as "Untitled," since this title is abstract enough to mean and include everything.

Webb's sculptures are made for indoor spaces. He grew up spending most of his time indoors, such as in huge shopping malls or parking lots, and this personal experience has profoundly influenced his style of sculpture. His artworks, which reinterpret modern indoor culture hilariously, make audiences view reality in a whole new way.
