2023 S/S Women’s Fashion & Beauty Trend

In the world of cosmetics, containers and packaging reveal much about the brand’s philosophy and history. What about in fashion? The collection of clothes and the overall beauty demonstrates the designer’s thoughts, and the Spring/Summer 2023 women’s collections highlight new clothing materials, different sizes, and fresh makeup looks.

In this makeup artist column, we will introduce the philosophy that each brand has based their looks on, along with our assessment of the makeup trends reflecting their inspirations, by using our data of makeup created by artists backstage.

Women’s Fashion Trend - 2023 Spring / Summer

1 See-through maxi dress

Prada, Milan

Miu Miu, Paris

Chanel, Paris

Molly Goddard, London

In the Spring/Summer 2023 collections, viewers were captivated with see-through maxi dresses that dramatically show the characteristics of the fabric covering the entire body. The accent is on fabric that explicitly reveals how the inner wear is separated from the outer wear, while at the same time stressing femininity. Similar to straight-cut dresses, maxi dresses don’t exaggerate the volume, with mixed and matched cropped tank tops and full-coverage underwear underneath the layer of the maxi dress.

2 Over accessorizing

Elisabetta Franchi, Milan

Giorgio Armani, Milan

Suedeson By Kimberly Tandra, NY

Tom Ford, NY

Another fashion trend has been an over-accessorized look. It literally means wearing many accessories. Usually, jewelry is taken to play a supplementary role in fashion. You can’t, however, overlook the impact of jewelry in fashion because the materials and the size of the jewelry determines your style, and whether you’ve created a maximalist or a minimalist style. As seen in collections by Elisabetta Franchi, and Giorgio Armani, the color of the accessories match that of the clothes and even the background of the runway. Models wore big and decorative jewelry but when put together, they didn’t feel sporadic or extravagant at all. The trend continued in collections by Suedeson By Kimberly Tandra and Tom Ford. Models wore clothes and jewelry with matching colors. Tom Ford even used spangles for both the cloth and the jewelry to present the metallic tailoring.

3 Oversize Printing

Christopher Kane, London

Louis Vuitton, Paris

Alexander McQueen, London

On which part of the body can you express your creativity the most? The answer is your torso. Even with makeup, body painting attracts more attention than face painting. Major fashion brands showed design elements with big prints that covered the body and held the attention of the onlookers.

In the Christopher Kane collection, plants and the human body became a source of infinite inspiration, with images of human anatomy, such as the arm muscle, printed on a silk dress to complete a shocking look. The collection celebrated the complexity and esthetics of the human body, which were also well-blended into the fashion.

Nicolas Ghesquière, the creative director of Louis Vuitton, unveiled a unique art wear line by reinventing the proportion of a component in women’s clothing. 3D images of belts printed on the clothes were enough to create the trompe-l’oeil effect (a highly realistic image intended to create the illusion of a 3D object on a 2D surface).

Alexander McQueen chose the First Sight as the topic of their collection. “The eye is a symbol of that humanity, a register of emotion, an expression of uniqueness,” said Sarah Burton, the creative director of Alexander McQueen. “We also looked at the work of Hieronymus Bosch, at once dark and beautiful.” In the collection, the eye prints that reveal the creativity of the designer not only draw the attention of the viewers, but also demonstrate how all the printed images are filled with the designer’s thoughts and interesting elements.

The Garden of Earthly Delights, one of the most famous paintings by Hieronymus Bosch.

Women’s Beauty Trend - 2023 Spring / Summer

1 Matte skin, Glow lips

Miu Miu, Paris

Sacai, Paris

A.W.A.K.E. Mode, Paris

In the collection, we saw glow skin makeup here and there, but several brands reduced the level of glossiness and instead used matt skin makeup with glossy lips. They avoided using colors and just used the texture difference and contours, emphasizing clean looks that were intended to make the natural skin look beautiful.

When applying makeup to create a pure, natural look, the makeup base plays an important role. Choose a primer that can accentuate the inner glow and apply a layer of matt foundation to create healthy, soft-looking skin. People tend to think that you need to combine matt products to create a matt look and mix glossy products to create a glossy look. However, you can create the optimal look by combining a matt product and a glossy product in the right ratio and amount. In general, powdered contour products are used to highlight the face shape, but if you want to create depth naturally without clumps of makeup, choose a contour cream. We also recommend using a darker or a lighter foundation to contour the face.

For the lips, you can use lip serums that plump up lips with pink hues. For stronger moisturization, use lip masks for glossy lip makeup.

2 Bleached Brows

Louis Vuitton, Paris

Valentino, Paris

Stella McCartney, Paris

Eyebrow trends have been changing rapidly in recent years. Just last year, soap brows were trending, but now bleached brow makeup has become the latest thing.

Louis Vuitton introduced a fresh twist on everyday materials to disrupt the code of femininity and underlined manipulative change. It can be interpreted as an effort to exclude the role of the eyebrows, which normally have a heavy effect on the impression a person gives, to change their image.

The Valentino collection introduced a bold color palette, including vivid yellow and red. The entire face had soft reddish skin makeup applied and eyebrows that looked as if they were bleached to express a refined sense of beauty.

Stella McCartney also incorporated bright, natural makeup, matching it with yellowish clothes and hair for a unified look.

If you want to have bleached brows, brush your brows with thick and bright foundation or concealer in the opposite direction of your eyebrows. Then press your eyebrows with a transparent setting powder to fix your brows and prevent the foundation or concealer from being smudged.

3 Monochromatic Eye Makeup

Francesca Liberatore, Milan

Eduardo Ramos, Paris

Widi'z Élégance, paris

Monochromatic (shades of only one color) makeup refers to a makeup look made by using one tone or color family to create a unified look. In this collection, many brands used colors like brick brown for the eye makeup, accentuated by shadows applied on top of the eyelid line. Eyelines don’t appear to blend perfectly, and the face and hair colors, excluding the eyeline color, are of the same tone. You can see how the brick-brown shades created a contrast with the blue eyes of the model to make the eyes look deeper. Models were mostly wearing a high bun hairstyle to draw the viewer’s attention to the makeup and lift the face at the same time, so that the corners of the eyes don’t look droopy.

4 Extreme cat-eyes

Christian Dior, Paris

Chopova Lowena, London

Masha Popova, London

Christian Dior’s creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri showcased a Renaissance collection inspired by Catherine de' Medici, the Queen of France in the 16th century who boasted of her political clout through fashion. The makeup creative director Peter Philips used coal pencil instead of liquid one to draw long eyelines, which give the impression that the lines blended with other makeup. He used cotton swabs to gently rub the edges to complete the eyeline easily and efficiently.

He brushed eyebrows horizontally and filled in just the empty spaces. For the lips, he chose the color that mixed naturally with the natural lip color of the models to emphasize the eye makeup in general. He used winged liners to raise the tail of the line upward and crossed the lines at the inner corners of the eyes to make a tiny cross.

In the Chopova Lowena collection, experimental eye makeup was complemented by black curved lines enveloping the eyes, red gems resembling small facial piercings, and gentle pink coral cheeks.

The Masha Popova collection was held under the theme, Rush, also implying the brand’s intention to share the rage and pain of the war in Ukraine. All three brands extended the inner corners of the eyes with black eyeliner and used curves to convey an emotion or message.

5 Wet hair, Radiant skin

Enfants Riches Déprimés, Paris

Aniye Records, Milan

Ferrari, Milan

The most important thing when making wet hair is to fix the direction of the bottom of the hair from the moment you dry it. After drying the hair, you need to use hair spray to make the shape and apply a generous amount of hair serum to make the hair look wet.

You should make the hair look like flowing waves, which is a style that also brings out the cheekbone and the jawline, making the face contour clearly visible. Continue the glossy look from the top of the head to face by making the skin shine under the lights.

6 Retro Lips

Etro, Milan

Versace, Milan

Chanel, Paris

Whereas the Fall/Winter 2019 season was dominated by black lips, the Spring/Summer 2023 season was a riot of vivid or dark lip colors. There were many bright yellow, purple, and deep burgundy lip colors that stood out in contrast to the skin tones, adding a sophisticated style to the overall look.

Etro combined decorative accessories and neatly brushed up hairstyles to create a chic sexy look with yellow lips.

Versace and Chanel boldly layered various custom jewelry pieces for added glamor in their collections. Their logos, pendant necklaces and earrings were items that are sure to appeal to logo enthusiasts, Millennials and Gen Z alike, and achieved a funky yet sophisticated vibe.

For long-lasting lips, use lip primer or lip mask, then wipe it off with a tissue. Then put the color lipstick on horizontally making sure that there is no empty space. Next, tap the powder on gently. Then apply the color lipstick again. In this way, you can ensure that the colors stay on without revealing the natural lip color.
