2023 S/S Trend as Seen on the Streets

The 23rd S/S collection opened to a swarm of fashion insiders, tastemakers, and celebrities who were in attendance to welcome the four major collections. The economic and emotional unrest around the world seems to have ignited the desire and need for bold new efforts in makeup, reminding me of the phrase that struck home from the company’s Beautystreams lectures: ‘Brands that don’t stand out don’t get talked about.’ That said, here is my take on this season’s makeup trends that have incorporated different stylings of the S/S collection.

A Y2K take on styles can still be seen here and there. How likely is it that this pattern will continue into the year 2023? From my perspective, the newtro makeup trend will probably take a slightly different form in the next year. Some say that fashion cycles last for 20 years. If you recall, the 2000s was filled with experimental and rather erratic hairstyles, bleached or shaved eyebrows, and even blackish red lips. The styles covered in this column reflect this retro craze in combination with newly emerged trends.

If you remember from the last column, maxi see-through dresses were all over the runways. The sensual see-through trend can also be seen on the streets around the world. See-through clothes now come in a wider variety of hues and silhouettes, from H-line pencil skirts, widening pleats, and the mermaid cut. See-through garments that expose the body’s silhouette underneath the mesh fabric can be both flirty and seductive.

Bold, primary colors maximize the intense glamor of the style, while monochromatic colors convey a sense of tranquil simplicity. Innerwear and makeup that match or complement the color of the see-through clothing can help create a sense of harmony with the look by incorporating a variety of fabric materials.

Maximalist Jewelry

Over accessorizing seems to be one of the prominent trends of the season, as can be seen on the streets. Repeated use of the same material, whether it be pearls or chains, on different parts of the body adds a sophisticated touch to an otherwise bland look.

The accessories vary in length and size, with choker and multistrand styling being mixed. It is remarkable that they chose pearls, a rather traditional jewel. Classic styling continues to stand out amidst constantly diminishing trends.

Have you ever had your eyebrows tattooed? Many people have, regardless of gender, probably because thick, well-defined eyebrows are the standard of what we call beautiful eyebrows. The browless styling, which is often seen on the streets, is the opposite of this trend.

The contrast between dark hair and bleached brows creates a more alluring and mysterious feel to the look. The thin, natural-colored eyebrows of the 1990s are expected to continue having an impact on this vogue for lighter-colored eyebrows.

In addition to browless and bleached eyebrows, thin and skinny eyebrows reminiscent of the 1990s are also being seen on the streets and runways alike. Eyebrows are an important element that determines the first impression of an individual within 3 seconds, even going so far as to convey the person’s emotions with their varying curves and angles.

So why is it that the eyebrow trend, which contributes to such an important facial component, has changed a lot recently? The reason for the return of thinner eyebrows is probably rooted in the current trends toward natural beauty. The key to perfecting the thin eyebrow look is to draw a solid line using an eyebrow pencil over bleached or shaved eyebrows. #bleachedbrow is one of the trending hashtags on multiple platforms, evidencing the popularity of the makeup trend.

3

Stiletto Reverse Wing

The stiletto reverse wing, popular in street styling, is a type of eye makeup that uses black eyeliner, drawn diagonally from the front to the side of the eyes. This makes the eyes look lifted, longer, and wider. ‘Stiletto,’ which is known to many as a type of footwear, actually means a long, thin knife for stabbing.

Unlike the eye makeup of the Laruicci collection, the eye makeup of the streets does not incorporate much color, using minimal shading that is applied to make the eye line stand out. The skin makeup look is characterized by a non-glossy, matte texture highlighting the contours of the face to emphasize the stiletto eyes.

4

Dark Lips

The S/S 23 runways were filled with lips covered in primary or dark colors. The makeup of street fashionistas also featured low saturation colored lips and clothes. These low saturation colors are derived from the ‘emocore’ music genre of the 1980s, known for its rebellious tone.

The look makes us question if we are blinded by what we are taught to believe is beautiful. The dark lips seem to signify a break away from beliefs that are originally recognized as ‘right’ when it comes to appearances or identities. The neat and chic thick wavy hair parted 2:8 or the slick back ponytail hairstyle match the makeup look, which includes dark eyebrows drawn with low-saturation purple, black, and brown colors, spotlighting all the curves of the face.

5

Wet Curled Hair

When it comes to hair styling, wet curled hair that almost resembles a maze seems to be a trend this season. Hairstyles with artificially exaggerated waves that are relatively less glossy have become a new definition of luxury. You can create this look by applying hair gel and then using the heat of the dryer to fix the waves. Cover some part of the forehead with the wavy hair, as if to style tweety bangs, aka baby hair, to make your face look smaller.

Make sure to keep the skin makeup matte, as glossy makeup on glossy hair could make the overall look sweaty. Complete the style with well-defined eyebrows to capture that mysterious sense of femininity.
