2023 F/W Menswear Fashion & Beauty Trend

In the current season's Menswear collection, a consistent narrative from previous seasons persists, where the demarcations between male and female attire blur elegantly. This embrace of fluidity is strikingly evident, with fashion and makeup pieces seamlessly integrating gender-neutral micro-trends, such as skirts and corsets. Every collection from fashion houses offers a visual journey into the designer's creative vision and becomes a reflective canvas of societal shifts and evolving consumer ideologies, curating a palette of diverse styles. Notably, contemporary menswear is increasingly charting a trajectory where the nuanced equilibrium and inclusiveness shine through.

#DGFW23 Men's Fashion Show "Essenza"

The 23 F/W D&G Men's collection unveiled an ensemble rooted in the theme ‘essenza,’ translating to ‘essential,’ brilliantly capturing the profound heritage of Italy. The attire, while predominantly formal, radiated an aura of refined elegance. The makeup trends, continuing their dance with gender fluidity, found a harmonious partner in deliberately under-layered outfits. This synergy, complemented by a pristine skin finish and ethereal hues of soft flamingo pink, culminated in a visage that whispered sophistication.

Within this makeup artist column, we aim to distill insights from the prevailing fashion currents in menswear and extrapolate from data regarding the makeup interpretations embraced by backstage maestros for male models. This synthesis aspires to provide a forecast, offering a glimpse into the horizon of upcoming men's grooming trends.

Men’s Fashion Trend - 2023 Fall / Winter

1

Midi Skirts

Phipps, NY
Hed Mayner, Paris
Jordanluca, Milan
Dior Men, Paris

As the realm of menswear widens its embrace, its industry stake is concurrently on an ascendant trajectory. Audacious yet pragmatically curated designs spotlight this expansion. The deliberate dismantling of gender constructs is accentuated with an unapologetic layering aesthetic. In Phipps' most recent oeuvre, the standout element was the harmonious juxtaposition of midi skirts crafted from vintage denim to the resonant notes of Californian grunge, punk, and the unmistakable motifs of cowboys and bikers.

The blend of vintage motifs alongside contemporary trends ideally navigates the delicate balance of revisiting the past and charting potential future masterpieces. For this tapestry of innovation to unfurl its entire expanse, the public must approach new sartorial endeavors with an open embrace.

In Hed Mayner's collection, the artful curvature of single-breasted jacket sleeves created an alluringly feminine silhouette. Dior's artistic director, Kim Jones, sculpted designs that fluidly merged wide shorts — echoing the grace of skirts — with the finesse of midi-length counterparts. This amalgamation, reminiscent of streetwear inspirations, harmonized with the pragmatic and avant-garde aesthetics intrinsic to the fashion house. This particular Dior foray adapted womenswear patterns to menswear and garnered resounding accolades at the Paris Men's Fashion Week.

Men’s Corset

Dolce&Gabbana, Milan
Willy Chavarria, NY
Saint Laurent, Paris
Maison Du Mec, Dubai

Formal menswear has elegantly evolved. This season, the corset has emerged not merely as a fashion statement but as a refined bridge between traditionally gendered styles. A common feature is the three-piece tailoring achieved through soft textures and hues.

Dolce & Gabbana masterfully juxtaposed vintage ruffles with nude-toned corsets, seamlessly connecting the ensemble's top and bottom. This artful choice not only introduced a sensual sophistication but also transitioned the paradigm from a mere two-piece ensemble to a refined three-piece silhouette by adopting a monochromatic palette. The nude hue of the corset subtly underscores the intrinsic beauty of human anatomy.

Willy Chavarria's collection presents an exquisite melding of time-honored ready-to-wear with evening wear, exuding a palpable romantic aura. A satin top in rich black gracefully drapes with gently contoured shoulders, offering a harmonious blend of minimalist luxury. In contrast, Saint Laurent's collection elevates black beyond mere coloration to embody pure sophistication. The paired beige silk chiffon draped top succinctly illustrates Anthony Vaccarello's visionary aspiration to redefine men's fashion — clean yet undeniably avant-garde.

Maison Du Mec's collection, while embracing the gravitas of power dressing, intriguingly contrasts it with a corset commencing just below the chest, unveiling a sculpted waist silhouette.

Between Indigo And Purple

Emporio Armani, Milan
Gucci, Milan
Bianca Saunders, Paris
Fendi, Milan

While purple remains an unconventional choice for both fall and menswear, this season's collection endeavors to redefine this narrative. It audaciously blurs the traditional gendered fashion boundaries, fostering unrestrained self-expression.

Embedded within purple are connotations of “royalty, power, and transformation” — a versatile palette that brands have deftly manipulated to resonate with their distinct ethos. Emporio Armani, under the evocative theme “A Basketful Of Summer,” showcased voluminous outerwear in a classic indigo, drawing inspiration from aviation. Gucci unveiled an innovative ensemble with oversized tailoring in a royal indigo hue. Fendi championed a fusion of daily flamboyance and cultivated comfort, displaying an ensemble with a lavender indigo outer juxtaposed with a tropical indigo knit.

1

Soft Flamingo Pink Look

Federico Cina, Milan
Taakk, Paris
Officine Générale, Paris

A retrospective glance at the 22 F/W Men's collection reveals the introduction of a tailored base. Amid the continuous palette of soft pale pink in makeup, this year's collection has amplified the color intensity. Previously confined to women's collections, the ballet-core aesthetic seamlessly transitioned into the men's sphere, influencing the makeup ambiance. As outfits increasingly incorporated feminine nuances, the overarching makeup tone — from foundational skin to lip shades — gravitated towards a harmonious soft flamingo pink. Notably, the divergence from the previous year's matte makeup trend is the infusion of a subtle luminosity across the skin and lips.

This season witnessed a meticulous application of skincare products, enhancing the skin's natural luminescence. Lips, echoing the pink hues of the eyelids, conveyed a moistened vitality, completing a radiant and wholesome aesthetic.

2

Soft Warm-Focused Skin

Saul Nash, London
Yohji Yamamoto, Paris
Ami Paris, Paris

In the ever-evolving landscape of beauty, the pink-hued skin makeup now finds its counterpoint in the rise of soft, warm-focused skin. This emerging trend gracefully showcases the skin's innate undertones, making minimal adjustments. An impeccable skincare regimen stands paramount for those seeking to sustain this radiant texture. While traditional routines might have revolved around foundational lotions and skin products, adding an enriched serum or nourishing cream can significantly enhance the skin's intrinsic glow. An appraisal of recent makeup trends underscores a shift towards precision, yielding results of unparalleled finesse. To embody this warm ambiance, evading the grey undertones inherent in dark circles becomes crucial. Post-skincare, employing a color-correcting palette with soft taupe or beige brown shades to address the under-eye region and laugh lines will undeniably augment the sophistication of one's makeup artistry.

3

Dark Under Eyes

Anomalous X Hot Wheels, Dubai
Louis Vuitton, Paris
Dries Van Noten, Paris

In the avant-garde menswear collections, distinguished by their novel materials and silhouettes, a harmonious blend of casual and gender-neutral aesthetics emerges, especially resonant with the sensibilities of Gen-Z. Often, grunge-inspired ensembles emphasize a shadowed under-eye, leading some to believe in the redundancy of meticulous under-eye makeup. However, bypassing foundational makeup and applying eyeshadow directly over inherent dark circles may result in an uneven, fatigued appearance.

For aficionados aiming to emphasize the under-eye or employ darker eyeshadows, it's prudent to opt for a hue that's either a semi-tone lighter or in harmony with one's skin tone. A lightweight liquid concealer or specialized color-correcting palette becomes instrumental in this endeavor. Subsequently, integrating point colors like rosy brown or dark brown, meticulously applied beneath the eyelashes, ensures a seamless gradient effect.

4

Subtle Starry Colors On Eyes

Fendi, Milan
Zegna, Milan
Wooyoungmi, Paris

With brands championing individualism and embracing gender-fluid nuances, eyeshadow palettes infused with primary colors and metallic facets have notably graced various collections. While seemingly inconspicuous, such subtle strokes possess the prowess to redefine an ensemble without overshadowing its inherent mood. Silvia Venturini, the visionary artistic director behind the Fendi collection, sought to encapsulate a trifecta of incredible, sexy, and cozy elements, mirroring the multifaceted glamour of everyday life. When dabbling with vivid under-eye shadows, one should be wary of the skin's natural oils, which may cause inadvertent smudging; a judicious application of loose powder before color deposition is thus recommended. One might consider blending them with their metallic liquid counterparts to further amplify the vibrancy of primary eye shadows.
