2023 F/W Makeup Trends

Two of the world’s top luxury brands held runway shows at Jamsu Bridge and Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul. Out of all places, they chose Asia, and more precisely, Seoul. As a Seoulista, I was surprised by Louis Vuitton and Gucci’s bold decision. Now that we can witness fashion and makeup from around the world in Seoul in person, there is a global standard, meaning the same trend spreads beyond Seoul and to Milan, London, and New York. And such a standard was clearly visible from the looks of trendsetters who flocked to these runway shows.

In this column, I’d like to give a brief introduction to the biggest makeup trends from the Fall/Winter 2023 street style.

Women’s Beauty Trend - 2023 F/W Street

1

Simple but sophisticated

Now that face mask mandates have been lifted, the makeup trends have been clearly divided. While one side is going after minimal makeup that creates a “born to be natural” look with minimal product usage, others are going for a look that has evolved one step further from the existing trend, incorporating a diverse range of colors and materials. The first look we’re going to look at is simple makeup that reveals the natural skin texture and only slightly enhances the eyes, which is good for light and quick makeup. Let’s take a deeper look at keywords for the beauty trends seen on the Fall/Winter 2023 runways and streets, along with the details on their makeup styles

#No-makeup Makeup

In the realm of fashion and makeup, you may have noticed that simplicity can lead to sophisticated and luxurious looks. Just as drawing on a blank, white sketchbook gives distortion-free expression, clean skin makeup creates a base that is more important than other makeup styles that introduce colors.

MiuMiu, 23 F/W Paris

US celebrity makeup artist Jamie Greenberg said, “No-makeup makeup has been popular for a couple of years now, and people definitely don’t want cakey makeup. They prefer skin makeup that appears to be their natural skin tone.”

While in the past people covered blemishes to achieve a clean look and applied contouring to change their face shape, now it’s all about revealing your natural skin tone and natural facial curves. Here, you should maintain the skin's inner moisture and apply matte foundation often seen in the Fall/Winter trends across your face in layers. When applying layers of foundation, you need to apply it on eye bags and smile lines, where shades are most often created on the face. Additionally, apply foundation on the forehead and the jawline, which are highlighter zones for a natural makeup look that creates transparent skin while improving dullness. Here, the key is to use the same color for the hair, eyeshadows, and lips to create a less dynamic look.

#Siren Eyes

Valentino, 23 F/W Paris

Winged eyeliner or cat eyeliner was also introduced in last year’s street trend column, but they have become shorter and thinner this year. Eyeliners with an exaggerated length have now become closer to natural winged eyeliner that can be easily spotted in daily makeup. For the skin makeup, a matte foundation was used without apparent contour shades for a clean look, while single color was applied on the lips to complete a natural look. In the Valentino Fall/Winter 2023 collection, minimal eyeshadow was used on eyelids to remove excess oil and black eyeliner was used for a sharp wing, creating a classic yet defined look around the eyes. If you want those siren eyes on Asian eyes, just slightly open the eyes and draw the eyeliner so it won’t overlap with the double eyelids and make a wing for a sharp look. Choose a non-waterproof pencil eyeliner for easy smudging to draw a guideline. Then use dark eyeshadows and dab them on your eyelids to minimize smudging.

Repetition of Y2K

The evolution of the Y2K trend has allowed a more vigorous use of colors and materials compared to existing makeup looks. The Y2K look that has continued from the existing trend has changed over time. Whereas pink tones, such as light pink, were mainly used to achieve a girlish look, now purple, representing freedom and creativity, has been added for a more aggressive and bold makeup look. For the hairstyle, instead of changing the hair itself, hair clips were used to create a look that pushes the boundaries of hair styling. Now, let’s look at two features that are in stark contrast with the first half of this column.

#Evolution of Y2K

Giorgio Armani, 23 F/W Milan

#coquette, #dollette aesthetic, and #barbie core styles met the Pantone color of the year 2023, Viva Magenta, to deliver a new makeup with a fresh mood. The coquette aesthetic style is trending among Gen Z, which is about looks based on a lovely and cute image. This makeup look combining a more kitschy and funky expression can be seen as an advanced form of Y2K makeup. Key points of the makeup have diversified as much as the color. A passionate color palette that includes nadeshiko pink, sheer lilac, and purple is used not only in eyeshadows but also on cheeks and lips, creating a more compelling girlish look. The most difficult thing about pastel makeup for ordinary people is that the colors like purple can look very desaturated and muddy in the end. The secret here is to apply a white eyeshadow base before the makeup and to add eyeshadow vertically as if you are piling up color to avoid a cakey look.

#Hair Clips

Street Fashion, NY

Off-White, 23 F/W Paris

Snap clips or snap pins have made a comeback. While they held hair in place in the 90s, they are now used as a decorating element in this season’s collections and street fashions. Off-White's Fall/Winter 2023 collection showed a cogwheel pattern wrapped around the entire head, while a fashionista on the streets of Milan wore loop-shaped accessories tied to their hair as a fashion item.

What is worth noting here is that they toned down the overall color using metallic silver materials, so they don’t lean too much towards a cyber look, but more towards a wearable style. Another feature of the trend is the use of small hair clips in repetition to create a larger piece. If you've only imagined low-key, brownish outfits or makeup for fall, embrace mixing and matching different materials and colors to break away from tired convention.
